Sales clerks scan drivers licenses now?

Some store clerks are not bright enough to read you DOB and actually figure otu your age. So they use the software on the cash register to figure it out for them.

That is exactly the reason.

However, my tin foil hat is on tight, and my trust is completely shot. I am not ever going to allow someone to scan my license. I pull it out of my wallet and show them, but never let them hold it. It is not theirs, they do not need to touch it. If that is a problem, then whatever I am trying to buy will be left on the counter and I will leave. No scene, no arguing, nothing.

Next step, National ID cards. "Oh but we need them, for immigration and terrorism reasons.".....you can have them. This good ole' boy will not be partaking. :D

Has anyone noticed all the cameras around the city? I guess those are for "traffic related issues" ......yes sir.:tough:

Anyone else need a tinfoil hat???? I will have to make myself a new one, mine is a little to tight.:D

But I am serious....no scanning of my DL is permitted.

If you are over 50, you don't have to be IDed any more. They should have made it 30. Actually, the whole law should have been allowed to expire, if you ask me.
Actually, the law they passed last year required EVERYONE to be ID'd for alcohol and tobacco products no matter how old you are. They don't care if you look 70, they are required to ask for ID. Every time I buy cigs, they ask for ID and manually enter my birthdate on the register before it will allow them to finish ringing up the purchase. If that law changed, I haven't heard about it yet.

I thought it did expire. In fact I thought they actually repealled it a few weeks early.

:D

I don't know. I still see the signs in all the stores we got to that say "By TN Law we are required to blah blah blah....."

Good in theory but will not work with anyone who follows the TN alcohol and tobacco laws. An ID that you can not physically verify is valid is in fact not valid. No one really follows the law on it but a ID in a plastic holder like a wallet is not acceptable. I worked for a joint that required us to follow the letter of the alcohol laws and if you would not remove it from your wallet and hand it to me you would not get served.

So if you can't feel it, touch it, and turn it around in your hand, it doesn't exist? We're all gunna die from lack of oxgen. :D

scratch up the bar code...accidentally of course...problem solved

They now use a "2d" barcode. You'd have to scratch off about 90% of the markings to make it unreadable.

According to some "articles" I've found on the web, that law should've expired. But I can't seem to find anything concrete to back that up. C'mon Fall, you're our law go-to-guy. Where's it at? :D

Ok, here is the law that required universal ID 57-5-301

Here is the bill that would have removed the sunset clause and allowed it become permanent SB2939/HB3265

From what I can tell it was held on the House Desk and never voted on or became law, therefore the universal ID law did sunset on July 1, 2008 and is no longer the law.

Any other opinions are greatly welcome.

Last year's law was set to expire but the Legislature passed basically the same thing with a provision exempting 50 year olds. The Governor signed it and it went into effect on July 1, At least that is what I heard. But I hope it did sunset.

I think we are the only state in the US with such a ridiculous law.

Bill to end universal carding for beer heads to governor

Bill would allow clerks to not card those older than 50

By ERIK SCHELZIG • Associated Press • April 30, 2008

A bill approved by the Senate on Tuesday would strip out penalties against clerks who serve people who reasonably appear to be older than 50 years old.

"We just had a lot of complaints from older folks that resented having to show ID for every purchase," said Emily LeRoy, associate director of the Tennessee Oil Marketers Association.

The law that went into effect in July requires mandatory carding for anyone buying beer at a supermarket or convenience store — regardless of how old they look. The requirement does not apply to liquor and wine sales or to bars and restaurants.

The bill has been sent to the governor's desk. A spokeswoman for Gov. Phil Bredesen said he has not yet seen the bill so it's unclear whether he will sign it into law.

The mandatory carding provision was part of legislation that also created a voluntary training program called for by vendors and their employees. Participating businesses face lower fines if found guilty of selling beer to minors, and their beer permits can no longer be revoked on a first offense.

Those restricted penalties would remain in place even if the universal carding rules are removed.

Beer sales are traditionally regulated locally in Tennessee, while liquor sales are regulated by the state. Beer can't be sold in stores that sell wine and liquor.

LeRoy said the measure approved by the Senate would still allow clerks to refuse sales to people who appear older than 50.

"But if it's my granddad I can still sell him beer without penalty," she said.

So THATS why I still get carded for tobacco. That bill only mentions alcohol. How stupid!

Nonetheless, it's still an incredibly stupid law.

Yep !!! Now a clerk can insult someone by not asking them for ID implying the appear over 50 years old. The 46 year old mother will really like that won't she? :leaving:

That is what happens when laws are filtered through several layers of store ownership and management and left up to a minimum wage clerk to interpret
