A recent study by a Vanderbilt University researcher shows that for every year a person spends behind bars, life expectancy decreases two years.

Evelyn Patterson is assistant professor of sociology at Vanderbilt. Her study, published online last month by the American Journal of Public Health, looks at New York parolees released between 1989 and 1993.

The results showed a 15.6 percent increase in the odds of death for parolees compared with people who had never been to prison, which translates to a two-year decline in life expectancy for every year served inside prison.

Patterson said the study did reveal a small bright spot. If a prisoner serves out parole without returning to prison, the study shows he eventually gains the years back to his lifespan lost during his prison stay.

I was thinking the same thing. For the "hardened" criminal, the greater the number of years they spend in prison, they are probably more likely to "not make it" compared to someone wearing a button up shirt to the office every week. Also consider the fact that it is very difficult for a hardened criminal to adjust to an honest living (harder time finding work, prejudices, etc), and then that makes them repeat offenders. As they get more desperate, they sometimes take more chances, eventually coming to the end of their shortened life expectancy.

 

Heresy says that the average US inmate has a higher standard of living that the majority of 3rd world countries, thus I think it has more to do with lifestyle instead of the living situation (prison).

I'm more of a fan a shorter sentences in prisons very, very different from what we have today.

It's like the study that says that people who drink Diet Coke are more likely to be fat.  The problem is not with Diet Coke, the problem is that people eat a triple meat cheese burger and then they think drinking Diet Coke will make up the difference.

If you sum up this "study" it says that criminals are more likely to die. Really? What a friggin' breakthrough they have there. Their next study will probably tell us that water is wet.

If they don't come to the conclusion that water is wet, they may at least come to the conclusion that ice water never gets watered down like a 5 hour-old fountain soft-drink.

The real reason for the reduced life expectancy wasn't prison, it was that they lived in New York. They looked forward to a shorter life so they wouldn't have to listen to Cuomo and Bloomberg. :pleased:
