scary statistics

My best friend is getting her masters in criminology from the University of Cincinnati. One of the facilitators sent this out.

I thought I would share this with the recent gun control legislation and such. The "UC stamp" certainly has polished me into a empirical evidence ONLY researcher. Therefore, I think this evidence is overwhelming! Check it out Aren't Statistics Wonderful??
Doctors
(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
(B)Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
(C)Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept.of Health and Human Services.

Now think about this:

Guns
(A)The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. Yes that's 80 million.
(B)The number of accidental deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
(C)The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188. Statistics courtesy of FBI>

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Fact: Not everyone has a gun, but almost everyone has at least one doctor. That means you are 9,000 times more likely to be killed by a doctor as by a gun owner!!!

Maybe you need to email that to a Fox News reporter wonder what would become of it, if it would get reported on the news or not. Oh and I wonder how many of those where kids that could have had a real fighting chance in life. Edited by ted

I was talking to a doctor friend of mine about these statistics. I even joked that doctors kill more people a year than guns and that we need to ban doctors. We both laughed. He is a big gun advocate. every time I visit him he asks me to remove my pistol to get an accurate weight. Then we spend time comparing each others carry guns.

He is the best doctor I have ever seen. He honestly cares and is more worried about the patient than making a buck. He has made house calls for my family on several occassions.

I can relate, I've been to too many doctors the last few months and most seemed incompetent.  I acknowledge that there are some good ones out there though.

I can't begin to count the hundreds of ways you could possibly die in the hands of a healthcare provider there are so many different complications possible with the human body. . .

I've only seen 3 CODs that could ever be associated with firearms- gun shot wound, blunt force trauma, and asphyxiation.

I've tried that tack in the past and witnessed no miraculous conversions. "Yes but you NEED doctors and you don't NEED guns."

But what about all those automobile accidents? "You NEED automobiles but you don't NEED guns."

What about all those accidental drownings? "You're right, we ought to ban swimming pools along with guns. People don't NEED swimming pools either."

Well, did he dispute the numbers?

That old bit of lore has floated around for years, but the physician doctor part is a murky and unprovable figure. Particularly since most of the actual accidental deaths occur in hospitals where a doctor had nothing specifically to do with it.

You can read the various takes on it with just simple search.

OS is correct, if you read my post above carefully you'll see I stated "healthcare providers" and if you total "gun deaths" the same way CMS totals center attrubuted deaths you get more deaths b/c they include the out there homicides and accidents.(some are borderline applicable while others are not)

To break down the stats. .

GSW- these are what the stats shoud really break down further into Homicide/attemted homicide, Justifiable Self Defense, and, Neglegent Discharge.

Blunt force trauma- unless they were shot with the gun before they were hit over the head with it these shouldn't be considered firearm deaths.

Asphyxiation- Anyone whos had children knows damn well that at certain ages they put everything in their mouth including that shell casing/bullet that rolled under the couch, a sad accident but not something that gun legislation can ever hope to curb. Luckily they are very few and far between.

The FBI's data is much better collected and presented,(yet still doesent state if a BFT with a gun falls under BFT or the firearm type used as a club) but realistically the number of deaths that would be preventable would be homicides + accidental discharges which is closer to 10,000 per year on average.

I like this comment from the link above,

Most people can agree that doctors and guns can both be lethal. But comparing doctor deaths with gun deaths seems odd. For one thing, the intention is different. Doctors are usually trying to save patients, not kill them. Violent criminals who might use guns in committing a crime, however, often do have the intention of causing physical harm. Doctors may be dangerous through their ignorance or incompetence, but they are not actually out to kill anyone.
