Hey all

I am a new join so I will provide a bit of info about me and get on with my questions. I live in Memphis and I am a former Marine. I own a S&W 65-3 and a 442. I am buying my brother's Glock 26 soon because he just got stationed in DC(Marine also) and does not want the hassle! I told him to take it with him anyway but he is a pessimist and doesn't believe it will really change there. Can't say I blame him.

Anyway I have searched some on this site and I was wondering if anyone can tell me TN's laws on having a handgun in your car? I am going to take my concealed carry course soon but I was just gonna ask what I can do in the meantime.

Also, I am having trouble putting a photo on my profile. I edit it the way it wants me too but always says upload failed. I tried a photo I found on the Net and also one I took myself but no luck.

Well, many thanks for having me here, I am proud to be a member of this forum now and I love TN! Not really thrilled about Memphis right now in its current state but I haven't given up hope!

Any help would be much appreciated

T

Not totally versed in TN law, as I live "up the road" in KY... but pretty sure having a handgun in the vehicle in Tennessee, without a permit, is a no-go. I believe your state requires you to have your permit to be legal.

Others will be along in no time, with a definite answer, and I'm positive this topic has come up before.

Anyway, welcome to the site... and we'll get you your answer shortly. :)

EDIT: Afterthought / Clarification - By the above, I mean the gun has to be unloaded, ammo stored separately, etc... (i.e. totally ineffective) when transported in the car. But again, others can and will tell you the actual law.

You are correct sir. Without a permit your gun must be stored unloaded *preferably in the trunk though that may just be an anal technicality of some*. The term "locked and out of reach" i believe is used. Glove compartments are a bad idea.

Dont carry anywhere that is posted correctly. To avoid a hassle, if i know i'm going somewhere that is NOT posted correctly i try to conceal to the best of my ability. Othertimes when i'm just out and about, i honestly dont care if i print a tad.

Dont carry where alcohol is served to drink. Liquor\beer\ stores are fine to carry.

There are more...and theres a freakin link on legallyarmed.com on this somewhere but for the life of me i cant find it right now.

EDIT: Gah, i cant find it. I'd recommend picking up this book... thingy.http://www.legallyarmed.com/resources/tnreferenceguide.htm

You can find it usually at gun shows and some stores. Its like 10 bucks or something. Its a really good reference as far as carry laws and such are concerned.

Thanks for the help so far. And Kint, until I get that carry permit I will feel 'totally ineffective' anytime I am out of the house here in Memphis!

I understand where your comming from Grunt. I live in the 'burbs but have to drive through M'Town 5 days a week. It took 10 weeks to get my damned permit. The wait was a killer!

(I work for an airline and cannot bring a gun to work anyway, even if I leave it in the truck!)

Keep this in mind, If you are busted, you have blown any chance that you have to eventually carry legally.

Welcome from south Nashville.

My understanding on carrying a gun in a car was that it did not matter if the gun was in the drivers compartment or the trunk but if you had it up front then the ammo had to be in the trunk. Or the opposite. You cannot have the opportunity to put the two together.

If anyone else can confirm or correct, please do.
