The latest Murder Statistics for the world:

It doesn't surprise me, other than a few raw sewage areas, we have a pretty good country.

The other thing to note about those stats would be the way they are reported. I would suspect that there are a large number of homicides in many of the countries listed above the U.S. that do not get reported. I have been to Honduras several times and even at number one on that list I believe that number to be low for the reality of that country.

The hoplophobes out there only tell you about 'gun violence'.  But murder is murder, whether done with machete, rock, pointy stick or AK47.  And when good people are denied firearms, they are more likely to be murdered, raped, or robbed.

Both of these are excellent points that anti-gun groups conveniently ignore. They also carefully word their "statistics" so that they aren't always lies. And to be fair Honduras surely isn't actually #1 on the list when you consider countries in Africa where kidnapping and murder are a daily, if not hourly occurrence and numbers surely run in the triple digits per 100,000 people. But as stated by ShamGlock the way these numbers are reported is highly inconsistent even among countries that do report. Many don't report and as a result countries that far exceed anything on this list don't even make it on the list.

some of these countries, its only a murder if the victim is "important" (sometimes that means male, sometimes that means well to do, etc).  Even here in the states a number of homeless/very poor/ mentally ill/ etc "vanish".

I guess it's nice to know that in regards to murder rate, we're better than most 2nd and 3rd world countries.  That's interesting and all, but how does the US compare to other "industrialized nations"?  Just looking at the colors on the map, I doesn't seem we're much better than anyone else.

... ok so I read one of the sited links ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/oct/10/world-murder-rate-unodc  ... and downloaded the spreadsheet....

The US is 104th on that full list when ranked from lowest rate to highest.

Do I question the reporting in a lot of those places?  Yep.  I know a thing or two about statistics and I'm a firm believer that there's lies, damn lies, and statistics.

It evidently doesn't take into account genocide or war. I would be curious to see exactly how they define murder. Some of those with low numbers are in active genocide and war areas. Somethings off.
