Thanks very much and letting me know what’s on your mind regarding the right to bear arms.

I’m a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights. Congress should not pass laws that take away these rights from law abiding citizens and leave criminals to terrorize the streets. Good citizens don’t abuse guns – criminals do. I will continue to support legislative efforts to protect the Second Amendment rights of law abiding Americans, and oppose efforts to overturn the Second Amendment.

In two recent cases, the U.S. Supreme Court clearly held that the Second Amendment protects the right of individual Americans to keep and bear arms. In the 2008 case, D.C. v. Heller, the Supreme Court held that D.C.’s restrictive gun laws violated the constitutional rights of Americans. Two years later, in McDonald v. Chicago, the court struck down the city of Chicago’s handgun ban and held that, like the federal government, state and local governments must respect Second Amendment rights. I joined legal briefs in both cases in defense of this constitutional right and was pleased with the Supreme Court’s decisions.

I am grateful you took the time to let me know where you stand. I’ll be sure to keep your comments in mind as Second Amendment rights are discussed and debated in Washington and in Tennessee.

Thanks for posting this.  Very interestin in that it appears to take a side (...the right one...). That bein said; I always worry about two things; ... the first is..."todays truth is tomorrow's lie..."; and bring non committal.  I'm no fan of Lamar Alexander, but i will give him credit for doin the right thing at this particular instant; always rememberin that tomorrow is another day.  Let's hope he actually believes and will act on what he says here.

Thanks again for posting this.

He seems to have left himself a lot of wiggle room in the last sentence of the second paragraph. This is his stock n trade, as it is from many in DC.

I don't think anyone has proposed overturning the second amendment, actually everyone, even the most active gun grabber says they support the second amendment. From my point of view he has expressed no different stance than Bloomburg or Schumer and we all know where they stand.

Unless he specifically addresses the issue of additional regulation in his statement I would consider him capable of voting for further restrictions, just short of overturning the second amendment. He has told us just that, and we should believe him.

Yup, way too much wiggle room in that statement.  Same type of thing from Corker too.

We may need a good solid candidate to run against them in the next election.  Send a message that if you do not completely oppose gun control, then you will be out of a job.....even if you are a Republican.

I totally agree. I wish that elections weren't decided by who has the most money. Congress was meant to be comprised of normal citizens who go to Washington for a few years then return to their career. Not by career politicians who have never held a real job.
