PA cops shot two dogs, now possibly three in the bed of a pickup truck on the road in front of a school with pedestrians watching! yes its true, I hate to say it but this STUPIDITY is going to hurt our fight for the second amendment freedoms we hold dear, everyone in that neighborhood is going to be against guns now because some cop acted like a fool.  I wasnt there and you can say I dont know the circumstances, but the dogs were fighting each other in the bed of a truck not in a school yard, they were not biting people, they were not rabid they were pets, I am curious how this officer found it better to shoot someones pet for fighting another persons pet instead of calling animal control.  How could this have been the best course of action, does anyone know whats under the bed of a pickup truck, hint... it holds gas!  How did this officer not consider the safety himself foremost and the neighbors, when he decided to shoot at a vehicle right above the gas tank on a public street with people walking around?  I am just dumbstruck at the neglect in this one somebody has to help me understand this.

Oh and the second officer with the shotgun, did he just have to get in on this too or something, and also why did it take 5 rounds from what is probably a 40 or 10mm to not kill two dogs at 6 feet, I would think about stepping up qualifications in that precinct.  I realize that comment may draw criticism so to that I say, this was not a high stress situation, it was dogs fighting in a confined area, they were not approaching the officer they were not running free over several acres, not even several feet, they had about 5 feet x and 6 feet y thats it. I have to drop this for now Im not taking this amount of stupidity by law enforcement well and I wish him well in his new job at the BATFE!

Fighting dogs can turn on anyone nearby and are unpredictable. And gas tanks don't explode like in the movies. We weren't there so we can't fly off the handle.

I understand gas tanks dont explode when shot, the mythbusters proved that one for all who feared it was possible, I also know a little about dogs and a dog fighting another dog in the bed of a pickup truck (or anywhere else) is no immediate threat to anyone that doesnt reach into the middle.  I doubt that the dogs would have been aggresive towards anyone once they were done fighting, and yes once dominance has been established the fight will stop, possible with one fewer live dog but most dog fights if left to run their course will end with the dogs walking away from one another and a trip to the vet.  I have two German Shepards now and if someone shot my dog in the bed of my truck because it was fighting another dog, without first calling animal control to deal with the issue I would not let it go anytime soon, not to mention the holes in my truck.  I cant imagine the dogs could be deemed an immediate threat to the safety and wellbeing of anyone not in the back of that truck and that is the first thing anyone pulling a gun must try to think, especially a person charged with public safety, I find it hard to believe the dogs in the truck were more of a threat to public safety than the officer firing his weapon in the street possibly creating a gas spill on the road.

Agreed.  Fighting dogs go into a primal "kill everything" mode.  What if the fight came out of the truck?  Now you've fighting dogs loose in a busy public place.  Then what?

The article states that area has 1 animal control officer.  How far away was he/she and how long would it have taken to get there?  And again, then what?  Lasso one of the dogs in the fight and drag it out?  The other dog(s) are just gonna quit at that point?  Not likely.   If the fight went on long enough for the cops to get there in the first place, those dogs weren't stopping until one of them was dead.

I'd be pissed if the cops shot my dog too, but then I don't carry it around loose in the back of a truck.  And I'm sure they filled out the proper personal property damage forms if there were bullet holes in the truck.
