Review of an UncleJak custom Capote

So a few weeks ago I got a gift from a friend. It is a custom made wool blanket capote for all things outdoors and bushcraft. Initial impressions were it is heavy, warm, very well fitted, and construction is top notch. It weighs around 8 lbs dry, but the weight is well worth the trade off in warmth and comfort. It has a large hood that is made to fit well with or without a hat on, which is a plus as I always wear a hat. It is made from two surplus wool blankets, 3/8" thick, and well stitched with a heavy duty machine. The other night when it was icing, and well below freezing I needed to do some outside chores in the field with the cattle. It was super cold, sleeting, snowing, and icing, with a heavy wind blowing. The jeans below the ankle were wet, but everything covered with the capote was dry. It stopped the wind very well, and was very comfy to work and move in. It is tied with a wide wool belt, and could easily be modified to use buttons if so desired. I prefer the tie as it lets me instantly adjust the tightness of it. It is a very large, heavy, warm coat, and one of my favorite things is it easily doubles for a sleeping bag liner instead of carrying an extra blanket. Its a throw back to the old days, mountain men used to wear them. They are just a simple, long wool coat, that is extremely warm and comfy.

I have spent a lot of time out in the woods and mountains of SoCal and would have loved to have one on those cold, wet, and snowing days. Thses days I am just too lazy to go out in that sort of weather. Either way, it is an awesome piece of personal protection!

I remember the thread about him making it for you. I am glad it turned out well. We are all fans of wool around here. Those surplus blankets are staples around our fire pit. I can't imagine how fantastic a coat made out of them must be on a freezing night. I will say it.......I am jealous.
