Thanks[/quote] Be advised, as a Servicemember you can apply for your carry permit without having to attend the HCP class. It'll save you some time and money. Once you have been issued your HCP you are permitted to carry your pistol with you. If you live on post this is kind of a pain though if you want to take it with you everywhere. http://www.tn.gov/safety/handgun/handgunfaqs.shtml#q8 How Do I Obtain Military Training Exception for the eight hour handgun training course required by TCA 39-17-1351? The Department of Safety and Homeland Security is mandated to require applicants to submit proof of the successful completion of a department approved handgun safety course. An applicant is not required to comply with the firing range and classroom requirements if within five (5) years from the date of handgun carry permit application the applicant successfully completed all handgun training of not less than four (4) hours as required by any branch of the military. There have been many interpretations of this statute over the last several years. Letters have been submitted from commanding officers, DD-214 forms, military ID cards, Honorable Discharges and General Discharges as verification of training. On March 4, 2011 this process was clarified with the standardized usage of the Department of Defense form (DD-2586) to document handgun training of not less than four (4) hours. At that time we were informed that all branches of service completed a standard verification of military experience and training on the DD-2586. On December 8, 2012 the Department was informed of two forms used by the Army which capture combat pistol training (DA-88-R and DA5704-R). These forms can now be used to verify military handgun training. The movement of the United States Coast Guard from the Department of Defense to the Department of Homeland Security altered this procedure. The Coast Guard utilizes a U.S. Department of Homeland Security, CG-3029 to capture handgun training. The CG-3029, DD-2586, DA-88-R and DA-5704-R are the only documents acceptable for obtaining military exception to TCA 39-17-1351. Samples of all documents and instructions are available on this website.

I always forget about the commie states. Willard, while we're on the subject, you mentioned in another thread you mentioned you were an MP once. On post, how would one go about taking their POW out for carry? I never lived on base so I have no idea how it works.

TMF, It depends if he lives in the Barracks or if he lives in housing. For both the weapon has to be rgistered on post. In the barracks is a giant PITA The firearm mus tbe stored in the units arms room and you have to have your commander approve every time you take out the weapon.  In addition to this the armorer has to come in and open it up.  So on the weekends it's really difficult to do as most units dont run a 24 hr arms room.  If he lives in housing its easier he only has to have it registered on post.  Transportation rules on post are like transporting a firearm anywhere without a carry permit, as no permit is valid on a military installation. In addition to the transport method you are supposed to make your way directly to the range or your storage area or directly off post do not stop do not collect 200 dollars.  If his residence is off post he is only required to register the firearm on post if he wants to take the firearm on post.  A copy of the on post registration is supposed to remain with the firearm at all times.   In the barracks it is not really worth the hassle.  Most Soldiers who live in the barracks store the firearm at a friends house.  Although the regulation does require it to be stored in the arms room ost commanders realize that it is your personal property, this coupled with it being a great annoyance to them usually means they dont mind.

So recap:

Barracks giant PITA

on post housing: keep unloaded and ammo seperate untill of post

Off post:  zJust the same as the rest of us if you dont wanna take it on the installation

Right on. For some reason I thought you had to put your firearm in the arms room even if you lived in post housing. I lived in the B's on Bragg and just kept my guns at a buddy's house.
