KPD wants to move away from Glock .40s to Sig .45ACPs!  According to the article, the SIGs are more accurate, with better ergonomics, longer lifespan (!0 years Vs 4 years) and are harder hitting.  They plan to start the transition in February and be done in April.

 

It's interesting to see a department move to an older caliber!

Where on earth are they basing this 4 year life span for Glocks? I'm not trying to go full fanboy but that's ridiculous. Most cops only shoot twice a year so there is no way they are worn out in that time.

 

I would rather have the .45 over the .40 though.

As a huge fan of Sigs (and actully Glocks too), this is good news, and I am sure they will be happy, happy, happy.  This is surpising considering THP uses Glock 31s.  I thought maybe THP may have set the mark for other dept. to follow.  At minimum I would have thought if KPD like Sigs, they would have considered P229 in 357Sig.

Methinks Sig Sauer has out sales repped Gaston or something. Maybe Sig stole S&W's guys.

 

Sigs are too complicated for cops.  And 99.984% of cops nationwide couldn't wear out a Hi-Point in 4 years, let alone a Glock.

Hey man, hadn't seen you on here in a while.


As a guy who loves his .45, I don't see the advantage over the .40. Sure more mass to penetrate clothing etc, but mag capacity and bullet velocity kind of weigh it even in my mind.

Maybe someone can help me understand why they picked the .45

No offense to females but isn't the Sig a much bigger gun than the Glock? For someone with smaller hands I would imagine the Sig might be difficult to grip.

 

 

The article does not mention how much they will have to spend on new holsters and spare magazines, never mind the cost of switching all their ammo to the new caliber. 

 

This will cost the tax payers much more than 13K.

There are some politics involved in this decision. I have spoken to someone in the department that said it is not about needs. I heard this about a year ago.

CDNN seems to get a lot of them. People grab 'em and shoot another 50K rounds through them.

gt distributors they got some glock 30s and 19s in recently along with some Sig p226 40's

friend of mine who buys a good bit from them said local police departments trade them in when the night sights go dim, discount +trade they only pay a little over what night sights/install would cost them.

Most knoxville area police trade ins end up at craigs firearms on Chapman highway, but the officers usually elect to buy back there own "old" duty gun

Most of them have an extra lever or two more than a Glock. Plus a hammer, maybe.  ;)

Someone may have already mentioned it but there is this thing called a CALEA Certification that it and $99 gets a sweet tea at McD's. Anyway to be a CALEA certified agency your hsndguns must not be more than 4 years old. Long guns can be older. Really the whole thing is quirky, but it kind of brings up morale in the department, makes everything look great, and the probably justifies more pay for the brass.

Even though the Sig 220 has been around for ages, it is becoming adopted more than any other handgun by departments. East Ridge PD and Chattanooga PD have had their Sig 220's for about 2 years now and they love them.
Really KPD is breaking away from the heard because most everyone by them uses G22 including KCSO. Edited January 23, 2013 by Patton

I deployed to Iraq with a machinegun and pistol that were both made before the Brits were put under Eisenhower.
