Montgomery County is offering a class titled, Profit and Production on Small Acreage.  Topics will conclude small fruits and vegtable production, bee keeping, small flocks sheep and goats, direct marketing, pollination, soils and irrigation and how to price.

I know farming isn't as glamorous a topic as a shinny new AR, but the fact is, when SHTF even in a minor way our food sources can be disrupted and we'll have to rely on ourselves for food.  I'm coining the phrase, "Grow now, or starve later", to be my calling card.  My goal is encourage and help anyone I can to start a garden now.

Here's a chance for people willing to drive to Clarksville to get some great information on small acreage farming.  Hope to meet at least one of you in the class.

Joe

P.S.  I have no affiliation with the ag ext office and will just be in the class myself as a student.

That's a good thing. I need to cut half the trees in my back yard to grow anything. It's a jungle with a canopy right now.

A lot will grow here in TN with shade, especially in the summer.  I found myself wishing I had an area I could plant that had some shade so I could grow lettuces, cabbages and other fall crops through out the summer.

Any large leaf plants can do well in shaded growing areas.  Zuchini, squash, pumpkins and kale all come to mind.  Most of your root crops should do well too.

It would be hard for me to cut down mature hardwoods since they grow so slow, but some good trimming can let in lots of sun light without killing a tree.

Also, beekeeping would still be applicable, as would small animal husbandry.  Chickens or rabbits would appreciate the shade in the summer as well.  The heat was brutal on my rabbits last summer.  I didn't lose any but my buck went sterile from the heat for 4 months!

If you decide you want some help shoot me a PM and if possible we can meet up.  Semper Fi!

When is this?  I didn't see anything listed on the extension's website.  Thanks
