Melting and Refinishing

I wasn't sure if this should be here or gunsmithing. I think here, but it can be moved if I am wrong.

I finally found a Smith and Wesson 3953. The is the single stack 9mm DAO version. It is a police trade in. I want to try my hand at dehorning the frame and slide. The slide is stainless and the frame is alloy. The gun needs to be refinished anyway. I was thinking anodizing the frame and getting coal creek armory to isonite it. I am open to other suggestions.

Anyway, anyone have some good advice on how to get started? I see some people use files and some use belt sanders. I want to do as much as possible by hand. Any help?
