<acronym title='Handgun Carry Permit'>HCP</acronym> rules while traveling

Recommended Posts

In 2 weeks I am driving from Murfreesboro to Boulder CO.  This journey takes me through a piece of Illinois, which does not recognize TN's HCP.

I will have my carry pistol, 3 other pistols, and 2 rifles with me on this journey, along with about 4000 rounds of various ammo.  Knowing Illinois attitude toward gun owners, this makes me more nervous than a long legged cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Hoping some of you fine folks could recommend a course of action other than "go the long way and skip IL".

The laws in Illinois are about the same as they are for Tennessee residents who don't have an HCP, possibly even a little more favorable (guns and ammo don't have to be stored separately in Illinois, just securely encased).  See

If you stop before you get to the state line, disarm, and place the weapons and ammo in a case or in the trunk, you'll be fine (with the possible exception of Chicago/Cook County, but that's another matter all to itself).

No, this is not a good situation, but it's not as bad as it's often portrayed, either.

When I first glanced at the map, it appeared as though skipping IL would add a couple of hours due to having to take surface streets... but further scrutiny shows it is indeed between 30-60 minutes tops.  I will be avoiding IL.

Thanks for the input.

Been a little while.  But my last trip through Ill I first looked up the gun transportation laws.  Then I sent off an e-mail asking if I was correct in the way I was planning on transporting my gun.  (only took one).

I then printed off the e-mail stating I was correct.  Took this with me.

Their are two ways to do this.  The best being asking to get a written despcription of how to transport in the reply.  This covers you when you say this is what I know, and the response does not show your origional message.

So now you have written directions on how to transport with the persons name/place of work/ etc...

The funny thing about Ill is that the popo says it has to be locked up, ammo can be with, mags can be loaded.  Believe it is the game warden says it has to be in a gun case, otherwise the same.

In the end even though you are going around Ill, I would recommend you send each state you are going through and email about carry/transport.  This way you have written directions.  Something to back you in court.

In addition detail anything/place/situation you think you may encounter in Co and ask about that.  Then you again have written directions.
