While I doubt its going anywhere, it does make me smile. Consider the $500 fee a luxury tax for choosing not to defend yourself, therefore costing the taxpayers more money in the event of a crime. I don't agree with forcing anyone to buy anything, but then again, they do force gun owners to purchase carry permits in most states.

It's the same reasoning as Obamacare.  It's wrong, but apparently acceptable to many.  I really like applying that same (flawed) logic to guns.  It really points out one of the faults in Obamacare.

 

I think we could solve many of this countries problems by implementing a mandatory year (or two) of service.  Everyone must serve in the military soon after their 18th birthday for 2 years.  Everyone will be issues an M4, and a 1911.  Keeping both guns and ammo is mandatory until you are 45 (and recommended for life).

 

During those years of service young people would learn how to work for a living and pull their pants up around their waist and other such important lessons.  Crime, fear mongering, and divisiveness would drastically diminish.  Self respect, confidence, and liberty would flourish.

Nothing more than a tax.  If the citizens vote to approve it, fine.  But it can't just be imposed on them.

 

I don't think military service should be compulsory for the average citizen, we pay taxes to maintain a standing army for that.  I do think public service in some capacity (military, police, fire fighter, EMT, etc.) should be a prerequisite for anyone who want to run for public office.
