How have you prepared for tonights ice storm?

Recommended Posts

Generators are demanding.  After long, hard experience, I've learned to run each one monthly, under load, for 15-20 minutes and then shut them down by turning off the fuel and letting them run dry.  I keep them filled with treated fuel and keep 15-20 gallons of fuel on hand.

I learned when the grid went down in the midwest a few years back that gasoline isn't available when none of the stations have electricity either.

Lots of water & food on hand.  Everybody's happy, happy, happy!

Well, I had to put on an extra sweater to go outside.

I almost slipped as I grabbed a beer from the fridge & I think I may have pulled a muscle getting up to turn the heat up to 66º, so to prep for future disasters I think I should really put some non-slip tape on the kitchen floor & possibly buy a less-comfy recliner.

I guess I should really leave a spare sweater by every exit point too. The walk to the bedroom closet is a risk I'd rather not have to take in future.

We started preparing months ago. In other words we already had extra food on hand, plenty of blanets, clothes, etc if the power goes off and such. The only thing I did special was take a quick once over through my bob to check on perishables and such because I did not know if I would have to take the hour and half drive to work the next morning, or if I would be stuck there for a day or so.

Preparation is a 100% commitment effort that takes place 100% of the time an inch at a time. Little things eventually add up to hey its going to snow, cool instead of OMG we are all going to die!

Might have something to do with being raised in the hills of West Virginia though...
