Why I joined the NRA

Here is a little story about why I joined the NRA yesterday.

I have been considering joining the NRA for awhile, yes I procrastinated somewhat, but that is a different story. One of the problems I have had is that are they really the best organization to join. That was my hang-up. Which one does the most good even if I don't like or agree with everything. There has been threads on here, "Should I join the NRA?". Thay have answered my questions or at least gave me more insight, but I wasn't convinced. Yesterday with the SCOTUS decision I realized something. Many reports at different media outlets spoke of the decision, talked about the NRA and what they were doing, their reactions, their comments, etc. They all were talking about the NRA. More on the SCOTUS decision. A lot of people see this decision as a victory. It is in a way but there is a lot that is scary about that decision, 4 justices did everything they could to take away our Right to bear arms, they voted against it completely. If it was up to them, we would not be able to legally own firearms.

So in the news, I kept hearing, the NRA did this, the NRA did that and if finally hit me. The NRA is the only organization that has any real power. You ask a politician, you ask a teacher, you ask a business owner, a factory worker, whomever, the question, what organization in the US lobbies for gun rights? The answer is the NRA. With the prospect of a super liberal, Obama, possibly getting into the White House, we need to do what we can to support the most legitimate organization out there that protects our rights as gun owners. I was glad to see some of Len's posts about that many democrats are fine with the decision made in the Heller ruling. This is not a slam against any other organization, I'm sure there are others out there that are very good, especially at the State level.

So to end my rant, if you are on the fence about joining, this might be a good time to jump off and join the NRA, to me, there is some scary stuff going on out there and a lot of people seem to be trying to take away our rights.

This is just my opinion, my $.02.

Disclaimer: I do not work or speak for the NRA or am I compensated to speak on their behalf.:D

Glad to hear that you joined. They aren't perfect, but they are the 600lb gorilla when it comes to gun rights lobbying.

Glad you joined. They are definitely the Largest gun Lobby in Washington (they are actually the largest lobby period).

I just joined the GOA this year. They are #2 in the fight...they are 100% NO COMPROMISE. I like that.....sometimes.

Any who, Welcome.

You hit the nail on the head. They are the only org with an effective, professional lobbying effort. Their future strategy is excellent: pick the low-hanging fruit first.

And they are truly non-partisan. Harry Reid I think has a 100% rating from them, despite being a Democratic sleazebag.

Welcome to the NRA. I really wish every gun owner would join.

db99wj, I kept procrastinating on putting a check in the mail for my husband to join and you got my butt in gear when I read your post, so his check will go out tomorrow. I joined about a month or two ago.

Welcome to the NRA! I was one of those who became convinced by posting that question on this very forum just a few weeks ago and I feel like I'm actually involved in the process now, instead of standing on the sidelines complaining about it.

I'm going to try to be at the FoNRA meeting at RangeUSA this Tuesday - I'd like to meet and thank Blackburn for her veiws and efforts on our behalf. I also feel that just paying annual dues isn't enough - they need help as well as cash.

Again, congrats on your decision, and thanks!

So here is an update. I haven't got my welcome package but I did get my free gift. I didn't know what I was getting. It was in a white box with China stamped on it,. So I tear it open like a 7 year old at Christmas, and it is a Rosewood handled multi tool. It came with all that you see below. Quality seems, ok, not a high end multi tool, but one that can stay in the Jeep.

Hey, I didn't get a gift! Did you join somewhere special for that or what?

RangeUSA. Just filled out the paperwork, put my cc info on it, a few weeks ago, and it came in the mail. The range was not promoting anything like a gift, just the membership.
