Y'all won't have a Kindle after the EMP.  :tinfoil:  Learn how to read a proper book.

But if it's a Zombie Apocalypse I'll be able to run a lot faster and still be able to read.

Just bumping this one back up to see if anyone is reading anything interesting.

I also wanted to mention, that for a limited time, Matt Bracken is offering his excellent "Enemies Trilogy" for free (Kindle) on Amazon.

And while not a book, Bracken has an extremely well written essay regarding the current world situation...entitled "Tet Take 2: Islam's 2016 European Offensive". Bracken does a great job in explaining his take on the current status of Islam - International Socialism - and Nationalism. imho it is more than worth the time it takes to read it. He draws many conclusions I've read and else where but has the ability to articulate much more succinctly than I could ever hope to do.

Here's that link: https://westernrifleshooters.wordpress.com/2015/11/29/bracken-tet-take-two-islams-2016-european-offensive/

fwiw, I found "Succession ll" by Joe Nobody to be so-so. The lead characters were just too super-hero laid back West Texas for my tastes...Oh Well. :squint:

I am currently reading "Left of Bang". It's about the Marine Corps Combat Hunter program and has some excellent material therein. It's more of a "militarized" version of Gavin de Becker's "Gift of Fear"...a must read even though not pro-gun.

I almost feel I need to take notes on "Left of Bang" and will be putting it in my small library next to "Gift of Fear" when I'm done.

:2cents:

I'm about 70% finished with One Year After. It's definitely different, as I guess it would have to be. Still well written though. It'd be nearly impossible to match the uniqueness and originality of One Second After...that book open the door to prepping for a lot of folks.

Thanks for the head's up on Rage hipower. I'll check it out.

I just ordered: Session ll by Joe Nobody. The first one was decent...so we'll see.

I thought Secession II was pretty good. I may have to read the first again though. Looks like Zach and Sam are getting pretty close. Wink. Wink.

I have to admit that the Sam I have pictured in my mind (from Joe's description as I have no friggin' imagination) is pretty darn hot! So I'll probably read the next installment... :pleased:

That's it...I have achieved dirty old man status...bout time! LOL

No...not yet. To achieve TRUE Dirty Old Man status, you must read or re-read all of Robert A. Heinlein's books from Stranger In A Strange Land on.

For an old Socialist, he could get pretty loose in his SF storytelling. lol

Challenge accepted hipower! LOL. I need to reread them anyway my friend.

I'd offer to send some to you(It would make my wife happy!), but most of my RAH books have been lost in the flooding here. I still have a few put away...somewhere.

I appreciate that my friend, but I actually have a few and just need to run them down...too many book shelves in too many rooms. Not that bad a problem really. :pleased:

I didn't read through the whole thread so I am not sure if these have already been mentioned.

Just finished "77 Days in September".  I was extremely entertained and thought it was very well written.  I like SHTF books that aren't just a list of all the tacti-cool items every protagonist seems to have.  This one is very much from the "every man" approach.

I also read the first book in the Frontier Survival series.  Also very good and an easy read.  A little predictable, but still good.

For me, nothing comes close to Lucifer's Hammer, but there are some good alternatives for second place on my list.

I recently read "77 Days in September". Decent book...definitely from an everyday guy standpoint. But I agree it's well written.

"Lucifer's Hammer" is indeed a classic in this genre. Great book!

Somehow I missed the latest Joe Nobody book was released. I will probably get going next week.

Me too. Fortunately I have Amazon Prime and it arrived yesterday. Here's to hoping it's better than the last one...reckon I hooked on the series though...

Trying a 30 day trial version of Kindle Unlimited this last weekend and downloaded a set of books called EMP.  Actually it's two series.  One is called Pulse and the other is Broken Lines.  Pulse is pretty good so far, though the author needed to have one more go around with an editor.

I found that a lot of the 'SHTF titles' are availale for 'free' on Kindle Unlimited.  Also - I just searched Amazon and found a bunch of reloading books and manuals avilable at no charge under the program.

I thought I'd bump this to the top to get some recommendations for my upcoming flights. Here's my criteria for reading right now.

1. Good survival info for after an apocalypse.

2. Authors who have researched their topic enough to present accurate scenarios on EMP or electric grid failure, which I think are the most likely scenarios for a real SHTF situation.

Have you read the Survivalist series by A. American? Good books, the latest was just released and he drops cool little tidbits of info here and there...

You all need to check out Dave McIntyre's series called The Fall!  I'm on book 2 and it's really great.  Also you can see Dave on The History Channel's Alone Season 2.  He is one of the contestants.

I just finished reading Cyberstorm by Matthew Mather. It was free on my Kindle, so I gave it a quick read. I went to Amazon after reading it and was amazed to see that it got 4.5 stars.

Don't be tempted to read this book. I would give it two stars. The author knows almost nothing about survival.  It's set in NYC. The internet goes down and within a day, the power goes out. Then, the water goes off on day 5. Conveniently, the main character's best friend is a prepper who has a generator that runs on gasoline and diesel. He also has a .38 with a safety. The power goes out at the start of day two and the looting doesn't start until day 8. He makes a new friend who is a computer hacker who writes an app so cell phones can text each other over short distances without an internet connection. Somehow, thousands of New Yorkers are able to load this app without the internet and charge their cell phones by connecting to car batteries. When a bunch of thugs steal some of their stashed food as they are returning on the street, passersby are able to stop the violence by taking their pictures on a cell phone and threatening to send them to the police.

The book spends an agonizingly long time discussing the weaknesses of the power grid and internet and the government's inability to protect either, but after realizing that the author knew nothing about prepping, I didn't trust his information of those topics.

On second thought, I give it one star.

The only thing I can see wrong with the access to literally thousands of STHF writers that Amazon gives us is that some are just copies of other stories and that some are just a waste of time in reading.

Thanks for the head's up jgrady.

I agree with you hipower...it can really be a challenge finding truly decent works in this genre of books. Generally Amazon reviews are relatively reliable, but individual tastes vary widely...

That's the main reason I check here frequently for recommendations...we all generally seem to be on the same "page" (pardon the pun) in regards to books.
