"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure.

It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. 

Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership.

At today’s press conference, President Obama said “most Americans hadn't heard about (the debt ceiling) two years ago”.

"I want to be clear about this.  "Raising the debt ceiling ... simply allows the country to pay for spending Congress has already committed to.  The debt ceiling is not a question of authorizing more spending."  He warns of the consequences, saying not raising the debt ceiling "would be a self-inflicted wound on the economy." 

"The full faith and credit of the United States economy is not a bargaining chip.  The financial well-being of the American people is not leverage to be used.  It is absurd."
