Psych meds linked to 90% of school shootings

Recommended Posts

One must ask the question "Causation or correlation?".

People who take psychiatric drugs are already unstable. Is it the drugs or the fact that they are already unstable that creates such a mental environment to commit such an act?

Yeah, the same argument to blame the medication is the one being used against "assault weapons". Blaming the medication is like blaming tequila for causing more DUI's than beer does. End fault lies on the person's actions, not what they ingested.

Well, my sister works in the mental health industry. I've personally seen and heard accounts of before and after drugs like Xanax.

My sister says from her accounts of the psycho drugs, it only helps a very small amount of them while it makes others worse.

From my personal experience of seeing some folks take crap like Xanax, etc., recreationally, it made them depressed, paranoid, and eventually suicidal. They were fine before and once they got off the sauce they were fine.

Again just my personal accounts from what I know. Your experiences may vary.

Some side effects of Xanax may not be reported. Always consult your doctor or healthcare specialist for medical advice. You may also report side effects to the FDA.

For the Consumer

Applies to alprazolam: oral concentrate, oral tablet, oral tablet disintegrating, oral tablet extended release

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking alprazolam (the active ingredient contained in Xanax) hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using alprazolam and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
•
depressed mood, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself, unusual risk-taking behavior, decreased inhibitions, no fear of danger;

•
confusion, hyperactivity, agitation, hostility, hallucinations;

•
feeling like you might pass out;

•
urinating less than usual or not at all;

•
chest pain, pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest;

•
uncontrolled muscle movements, tremor, seizure (convulsions); or

•
jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Less serious side effects of alprazolam may include:
•
drowsiness, dizziness, feeling tired or irritable;

•
blurred vision, headache, memory problems, trouble concentrating;

•
sleep problems (insomnia);

•
swelling in your hands or feet;

•
muscle weakness, lack of balance or coordination, slurred speech;

•
upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea;

•
increased sweating, dry mouth, stuffy nose; or

•
appetite or weight changes, loss of interest in sex.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

Doesn't matter.  At the time they get the prescription, that's the perfect time to flag them for temporarily restricted gun rights.  I don't like the idea of restricting anyones rights but better folks on these drugs than all the rest of us.  Plus, there should be a way to get the rights restored after they are off the meds and checked out.

Not all medications affect every patient in the same way so I feel it is unfair to automatically suspend rights based on a prescription. I truley believe this is where we are headed now that Obamacare is in force. The feds will find any reason to flag a permit holder. Once they get all the permits from the ones on the drug list, what will be the next thing they flag for?  Perhaps eating fast food 5 days a week. A person obviously isn't capable of making rational decisions if they would eat that crap would be the reasoning behind it. Sure, it is noones business what anyone chooses to eat, yet we seem hell bent on making everything else our business, even things that are supposed to be doctor/patient privilege. Would you feel the same way if it were you taking one of the drugs you think should be flagged?

Ha! Wait for Obamacare if you're looking for the real problems.

Folks always want to demonize inanimate objects for some reason rather than look at the root problem, people. I have a sister who is bi-polar and should be medicated at ALL times. Her manic episodes are frightening to the point she had to be put in a padded room by an LEO for a few days. Even on her meds she can be a lot to handle, but if she were to do something crazy it ain't the meds. These folks that do these shootings may have been medicated at one time or are currently medicated, BUT THERE IS A REASON FOR THAT! They are mentally unstable for whatever reason. Drugs treat symptoms, not the problem. In some cases it is a chemical imbalance which can be treated with drugs, but I can tell you from first hand experience, it doesn't fix the problem 100%.

They prescribe that crap to everybody with a toe ache. My girlfriend was on it when she moved down from St. Louis. It lasted about 10 minutes after she was here. Sometimes the medical profession really sucks. This is one of those times.

I can tell you from personal experiance that some of these drugs are a problem with some people . In 2008 I lost felling in my left leg due to degenerative disc disease. When I went to the doctor I was not thinking as clear as he seemed to think one should or something . I seemed depressed to him . I was in extreme pain , Wondering if It was going to be permanent and Thinking " am I going to be able to work "and so on . To me these are normal thought but He prescribed zololf for me and I too one pill. That day me and my wife ( of 28 years ) had a terrible argument and I was as irritable as could be . She realized it was the medicine .

I am not saying I am that pleasant to start with but this was a change for the worse. I threw them away and and told him "I am supposed to be depressed I can't walk and I have a family deppending on me " . Never took another one and never will. Some doctors are all about getting you on another pill . Life is not always a bowl of cherries and sometmes it is normal to be depressed.

Part of being an adult is learning to deal with what is going on around you . In my opinion ( that means nothing ) some believe that everytime you feel a little down you need something for it. I am not one of those. When for example a parent dies , or you are in your late 40's and you can't stand up , YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DEPRESSED .

But they want to shove some pill down you so you don't fell the normal feelings that you should be having . Some of these kids have been on everything under the sun for ADD and whatever they can come up and call it when most of the just had lacking of a parent being a parent and disciplining the child like they should have. After years of not having their true feeling and they hit some bump in the road of life , they can't handle it and go nuts.

Thay are handed an award everytime they do some little thing at school that was nothing when I grew up . Everyone has to get an award or the others might feel left out or inferior in some way . I always told my kids life wasn't fair and to get used to it and deal with it . As a child you learn many things and to me learning to deal with what is going on around you is one of them. Life is what you can make it with what you have to make it with.

I have always tried to do what was right . I don't steal and I don't buy anything that I think is stolen . I don't have much but what I have is mine . I worked and paid for it and can lay down at night with a clear conscience . I believe in God and always felt you will have to answer for wwhat you do at some point in time.

It is not up to me to judge these people , but I knoe the gun did not do it on its own. To me it is the person behind the gun that is always the problem . The responsibility lies on the person that pulled the trigger . Everytime you send a bullet out of a firearm ,YOU are responsible for what happens !!!! Good or bad YOU did it and if YOU can't handle that , then don't pick up a gun. The problem is not the gun. YOU are also resposible for storage of your firearms . I always lock the car and hide it if it is left in there . Again this is just my opinion and that doesn't mean much .

Sorry for the rant . In closing , I believe it would be more productive to start looking at the shooters for the problem . Medicine might be a contributing factor and I feel it is . Seems the 2 of latest grew up in high dollar income families so being poor and deprived can be ruled out on those 2 shootings . Violence from games , movies or TV some say is the problem . Maybe so but if you can't tell the difference in games and Hollywood " YOU HAVE A PROBLEM "!!!!!

As some may know I sort of have a tin foil hat so ,I am not sure we will ever get to the bottom of it and get the truth. I am not convinced that there was just one shooter in either shooting .But the gun in thier hand was evil simply because the person was evil. You MUST look at what you can change and accept what you can't but the main thing is to know the difference in what you can change and what you must accept. You CAN'T change the fact that the gun doesn't fire on its own so we must look somewhere else !!

As a resposible gun owner you are responsible for the storage as well . That doesn't mean that someone can't steal your gun and use it in a crime but at least make it to where they had to leave evidence that it was stolen . Broken window or something so when you report it stolen there is some kind of proof that it was locked up.

Again this is my opinion ,The responsibility for every bullet that comes out of a gun lies on the SHOOTER , good or bad , right or wrong that is what I believe . If you can't answer the results of the bullet you send out of the barrel , THE PLEASE DO NOT PICK THE GUN UP. I do not believe that criminals or those with some mental problems should have access to firearms. that is where the buck stops with me. Edited by Keyless

All that is really needed here a warning label on the prescription "do not use weapons while under this medication". And of course "this medication may cause you to be involved in mass killings" as a side effect. Then they can sue the drug manufactures instead of gun makers.  :)

I have to wonder what kind of authority will Obamacare give doctors in forcing patients to take certain prescriptions "they need?"  Don't take prescribed drug, lose coverage/pay fine.  Let the gubbament have a list of mental meds that disqualify gun ownership/purchase, then throw onto that list some of the "softer" meds that are over-prescribed by doctors meeting their quota - so the pharmaceutical rep will give them a new set of golf clubs...

I'll never forget my doc asking me how "are things going?"  I said, "They suck."  That @#$@#$'s face lit up like a Christmas tree.  "Are you depressed???" he asked.  He thought he had a live one.  I then said, "If I changed jobs, life would no longer suck.  I'm fine."  You could hear that game show "you lose" buzzer sound as he thought "I was THAT close to getting another patient on XYZ depression med."

  When you have people depending on the Government for their survival , then the Government can very easily control what they do. I see it that there is not much to look forward to. Most jobs are pretty nuch dead end now days . Most companies are getting harder to work for and care less about their workers. Benefits go down every year and so on . I voluntarily stepped down several times as I got to the point I didn't feel I was able to do the job correctly. Some thought I was crazy for doing it  ,but I felt that if I was not able to do the job properly anymore , it was the right thing to do . Most of the good jobs and companies that care about their workers are gone. With the true unemployment numbers , not the bull they tell us , the company has plenty to chose from for your replacement.

 I think these kids are pampered all through school and don't have any idea what it is going to be like as an adult. They are given a fairy tale about how great it will be when they get their degree instead of telling them chances are slim you will find a job in what you went to school for . Last number  I remember was something like 80% of college grads end up moving in with relatives because they can't find a job. It is a hard cruel world out there and they are not prepared for reality .

 How can you look around and not be depressed to some degree. How much longer can the country go down the road it is on before we go off a cliff. All the meds they are giving out just mask the ability to see what is happening around you in true form . Forget to take the meds or have a day were you have a little comman sense kick in and they can't handle the reality of life. Of coarse this is just my opinion and again it doesn't mean much .

 I believe the medications and drugs they are dishing out like candy is playing a bigger role than we will ever get them to admit to . Wonder how many dollars the drug companies spend on congress lobbyist ? The NRA is our largest voice and I bet the drug companies have a louder voice.

 As I am typing this I am having some heartburn from the arthritis meds , so I must go take another medication , you know , the one they give you for the side effects of the other one. Have you ever read the side effects sheets that come with your presciptions? I tried to go off mine and I just can't move without them. I am stuck in the cycle of the doctors and pills to be able to walk . I have to accept the cards I have been dealt and make the best of it. Do I need a pill to make me think everything is perfect when it isn't? Nope lets look at it with open eyes and deal with it now ! Being an adult means at some time you will be depressed !! It is a natural feeling and you must learn to deal with it in a healthy manner .

 A real study needs to be done on the medication angle of the shooting , but I am sort of afraid it will be like the tobacco industry . They have so much money behind them cover their tracks that it will probably take another big time whistleblower.

Anti-depressants and ADHD meds are highly over prescribed. Just because a Dr. puts you on a med doesn't mean you need it. My wife started having a medical problem several years ago. One side of her face would go numb, the sight in one eye would become blurry and she'd start walking into walls. It might last from a few minutes to half an hour. They ruled out strokes and suspected MS so they sent her to a specialist for tests. This idiot tried to put her on anti-depressants (depression was not one of the symptoms) which made her tell him something I can't repeat on a family forum and was physically impossible because his head was in the way. It turned out to be exposure to toxic chemicals where she worked and cleared up as soon as she changed jobs.

Some meds can cause odd side effects in certain people. I quit smoking 2 years ago using chantix and it was great (for me) but the side effects for some can be bad.

From chantix.com:

Some people had these symptoms when they began taking CHANTIX, and others developed them after several weeks of treatment or after stopping CHANTIX. If you, your family, or caregiver notice agitation, hostility, depression, or changes in behavior, thinking, or mood that are not typical for you, or you develop suicidal thoughts or actions, anxiety, panic, aggression, anger, mania, abnormal sensations, hallucinations, paranoia, or confusion, stop taking CHANTIX and call your doctor right away.

(red highlighting is mine)

That, to me, shows that the meds can cause the problems, not just make them worse.
