We Don't Register Guns Here

Recommended Posts

90% of people think guns need to be registered*

*I pulled that figure out of my ass, but I bet it's close.

I take it you mean as a matter of legal fact, not as a matter of policy preference.

I would say 90% of non-gun owners and about 60% of gun owners.

Are you referring to just TN residents or everywhere ? I've only run into a few people who are under the impression that registration is required in TN. Some of them were transplants from registration-required states, and some were non-gunowners who were not aware of different laws in different states. Also in my experience, some of those people falsely believe TN issues a "CCW" vs. an "HCP".

I would hope more people take the time to learn their own state laws and work to improve them. (Making sure registration is never passed, and maybe one day defeating Naifeh and getting restaurant carry.)

I was the guest of a local radio talk show this morning and I was amazed when more than one of the scholarly panel members erroneously claimed that TN's permit was a CCW permit.

I, of course, corrected this oversight very quickly.

Regarding registered firearms...

As a cop, I always laugh went I run across a gun during a call (usually having nothing to do with the said gun), and the person automatically spews (without me even asking about it), "Don't worry officer, I've had that gun registered to me."

Really?

Lying assclowns...:D

TBI is required by law to destroy those records within 72 hrs (I believe) after the check. You can tinfoil hat that all you want, but that's how it works.

I will be "tinfoil hatting" this......

"TBI required by law".....:D .....I can hear it now "Oh yes, we destroy that information within just a few short hours......because if we don't then we will come for us.

Make fun of me all you want.....but I too have a hard time believing that those records get destroyed.

Some people think Elvis is alive, OJ is innocent, and 9/11 was an inside job. That's what America great: people can have the most uninformed opinions imaginable and you cannot put them in jail for it.

It's quite possible that they believe filling out the form 4473 constitutes "registration in their name." In which case they are not lying to you but are merely uninformed.

All I can say is that the majority do think the 4473 is a registration.

And in another 14 years we're going to start having the yearly bonfire.

And with approximately 4500 forms a year it will need to be on a crisp if not frozen night.

Todd: That's funny. "It's registered to me". Those people must think that possessing gun automatically makes one a suspect.

jwp: That's good to hear that you set them straight. :)If people are going to claim to know what they're talking about, they should use correct terminology. We have a HCP because

1. Concealment is not required (carry to your preference) and

2. It's only valid for handguns. (Contrasted with KY for example which issues a 'Concealed Deadly Weapons License' which is valid for more than firearms.

This is exactly what I was referring to.

People have this automatic, subconscious thought that guns are bad (or at least not good) and that they need to "explain" something to me.

BryanP and jwp...your right about that. I was referring to the guns that were "bought from a friend" "but I had it registered to me."

guys laugh all you want. but just a little over 10 years ago this old man thought a handgun was supposed to registered in this state. didnt worry about it until i got my permit. that is why people should ask questions to try to be informed. if i remember correctly not knowing the law excuses no one.

Tinfoil hat, huh? better than Blinderrs.

Just asked a ? here and suddenly I'm a conspiracy theorist?

The point I eas askiing about was this...When the government gets something on a piece of paper (real or electronic), they tend to hold on to it in a "CYA" attitude. Warehouses full of military personnel filesin OK, 56 cases of documents sent to atlanta to be freeze dried after a flood damaged them in the City/County Bldg in Knoxville from Victor Ashe;s time a mayor. So please dont tell me they dont keep records.

Bah, not worth getting worked up about, goin swimming.

Hillbilly

Did I mention you specifically were wearing a tinfoil hat? Nope. My experience in the military, when the gov't "gets a piece of paper", they tend to lose it real dang quick. So no, I don't think the gov't has the capability of doing this. So yes, I am telling you they don't keep those records. :D

I overheard an off duty Chattanooga PD Officer at a gun show say that if he pulled someone over and they had a handgun that was not registered he would arrest them even if they had a Carry Permit.A Dealer at a table and several other people tried to convince him TN did not have a registration law,but he wasn't buying it.

OK, I have a ?

I know that the 4473 stays on file in the shop for like 3yrs or so, but whebn you call in for the background check, they ask for id or dl number and serial of gun and model, I have a hard time believing that it doesn;t end up on a DB somewhere

T or F?

Hillbilly

I Thought when the dealer called in for the check he only give the type of gun either handgun or long gun. I do not believe the have to give the Serial number of the gun you are purchasing. That info does live on the 4473 and can be obtained by the atf at a later date by visiting the gun store.

Now that sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen right there. Maybe he'll pull me over some time.

...and there it is.

Generalities based on skin color? Racism.

Generalities based on blue polyester? Perfectly OK...

While working for Metro and assigned to the area containing the downtown TA TruckStop, I had to deal with many truckers that paid for sex from "people of the night."

I say "people" because they weren't all female hookers.

Now, based on this and knowing that you're a trucker TDR, would it be fair for me, a "know-it-all cop", to ASSUME that you have paid for sex from transexual lot lizards?

Surely not...

Are there ******** cops? Yep.

Are there ********s in your profession?

Lets go easy on the "lumping"...it gets tiresome to someone who tries to go out there and do a good job everyday.

BTW, I'm married. Because of this, I fully realize that I don't know everything and apparently my wife does...

No, the make, model, caliber and type as well as the serial number are given. This is how they check the gun isn't stolen.

I had one come up they thought was stolen. It was a Chinese SKS with about a million serial numbers on it. You should have seen the Metro cops come by and try to figure it out. They weren't actually sure how to check for clear.

officers like this one are dumbass idiots and i blame the department they work for. the handgun laws change every year for most states, and yearly handgun law should be a course taught in a one or 2 day course at the police departments. they have "weapons training" so why not have gun law training? think of all the headaches it would prevent.

All I can say is a few years ago we used to have to fight TBI every month due to over billing. And back then they could go back a few months and tell you who purchaed the gun. I know they are "supposed" to dump the files... but they dont dump them all?

Any of you other dealers had a problem with them over billing where they go back and "research" the transaction? It makes you think huh?? What should they have on file to research?
