I'm trying to make up my mind on if to take a stab at a saiga conversion. Any one got one done and frequent the viola valley or Terry's range?

I'd just like to put a mag through it, decide if its for me. I've shot a WASR before but it was a rattle trap.. and the inaccuracy was annoying too.

Hey Magic;;

I'm just a pain in the butt on accuracy. I'm not looking for sub MOA on dried dog excrement shoveled into pot-steel cases or any thing, but I need it to be able to group at minute-of-bowling pin at 100 or I won't be happy.

Just curious if any one is getting that out of 'em or not. I've heard plenty of hype, just would love to verify for myself before starting.

I have one, I've decided to not convert mine outside of putting the standard skeleton stock on it.

I think you would be able to get what you want out of one.

I have no complaints about it.

Imo the biggest thing holding back the accuracy of any AK, especially a well built one like a Saiga, is ammo. The average mil-surp 5.56 is more accurate than most 7.62x39 that is widely available. Wolf, Tiger, old Chinese stuff, whatever. I think with some high quality ammo, like Win, Fed or other U.S. made stuff, a Saiga in 7.62 would really shine.

The 5.56 Saiga I had would definitely hold minute of bowling pin with the PMC ammo I shot through it. The 16" .308 Saiga I still have will also shoot that well with good ammo. I had an opportunity to shoot it at 550m with some military match ammo and it held to 8" at that distance.

If you want to come down to Owl Hollow some time you can shoot my 7.62 or .308 Saigas.

Btw, where is Terry's or Viola?

Viola Valley gun range is just outside of.. well, viola TN. I-24, manchester/tullahoma exit just before AEDC. About 8 miles off the interstate as your stuck driving it. Those last few miles can take a while, but its a rather large, nice range with lots of steel.

Terry's is off exit 105, I think about a mile and a half down road. Not as big on the public side, does have a gun-club side that does various things.. IDPA matches I believe are hosted there peroidicly. Has rifle out to 300 yards.

Once I got my Acog (yes acog lol) sighted in on my saiga it was extremely accurate from a ghetto rest (range bag) and would group shots very very close together with cheap ol wolf ammo....i have since put the Acog on my .308 22" barrel'd Saiga and stuck the Eotech on the 7.62x39 (you can see pics in some other threads in here)

Lol yeah well i bought the Acog knowing I wanted a .308 (thats what shes calibrated for out to 600yds) and thought for the longest time i would get a HK91 or FAL and ended up with the Saiga lol. The Eotech I bought for my PS90 that I have been neglecting lately so I put her on the 7.62x39 and she seems pretty happy there :-D I will tell you though im always amazed at people that will spend $1500 on an AR but wont buy anything better then a $100 scope for it...or people that spend more money for an AR "tacticool" rail system then they do on their sight. ATM my optics are extreme overkill for my "budget" saiga's but I figure its not too hard to find a use for a good sight. My biggest limitation is my own personal lack of accuracy...I will readily admit im a pretty lousy shot.
