"Police departments facing ammo shortage nationwide"

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine was in Carter's Shooting Supply the other day and the salesperson in there told him that they had police officers coming in buying up ammo for their departments.

Demand suddenly went WAY up and supply did not (so it seems) ... until supply goes up or demand goes down it may be like this for a while.

Weren't there claims that the DHS and a bunch of other alphabet soup agencies were hoarding the shit out of some ammo a while back?  Like millions of rounds more than they could possibly use?

Yes, but when you consider how many federal agencies under the DHS have armed Special Agents and other agencies that use lots of practice ammo like FLETC and the US Coast Guard, I think the alarmist tone of those reports drops dramatically.

That's all well and good, but...how much "practicing" are these guys doing???  I know some leo's that only fire their weapon once a year for qualifications and that's it.  I can't see a bunch of paper-pushing, desk-chair-warming, fat-arse IRS types going to the range all that much.  The ammo is either stockpiled somewhere collecting dust just so others can't get any, or it has another use intended.

DHS did purchase over 1.5 billion rounds of 5.56 ammo last year. I can't recall how many rounds were purchased for handguns, but it was pretty substantial too.

In 2012 it was reported that DHS purchased 450 million rounds of .40s&w.

The LE shortages as more .45 than .40 though.

most federal leo have to shoot four times a years with every gun they carry on and off duty.   that can run into a bunch of ammo.

How about we confiscate their damned guns? Too many of them!

I can see it now. "We are going to pull the permit requirements so you can reload us some ammo."

Yeah, if they had fewer guns, there'd be less crime, right?

At least in Mexico and along the southwestern border.

Sounds like the average gun owner nowadays when Walmart brings ammo out of the stockroom.

At a Walmart this morning some guy that looked like Charlie Daniels was itching about the lack of .45 ammo saying, "All they ever order .40 ammo and no one buys it".

I know several 3 letter agency agents who have to qualify once every quarter.
