walmart and ammo

Recommended Posts

It isn't risky if it is simply for personal use. For example, I worked at Walmart when this whole "Tickle Me Elmo" crap was going on. You couldn't get one without a fight. Now, if an employee was to snag one as they're hitting the shelves so that they can give to a relative, that's okay, but if they're turning around to sell it on eBay for $200, they'd get fired if they are caught. Simply stated, you can't use your employee discount to resell items. They can and will fire a person for that, and in this economy anyone stupid and greedy enough to do that deserves to lose their job and starve.

I worked at a Walmart for a little while about 20 years ago, but I'll be darned if I remember ever getting a discount. I see what you mean, though. In this economy it's not worth losing a job over. They'd have to be moving a lot of ammo to take such a risk.

Truthfully, I don't really suspect the employees would be buying with a discount and reselling at a huge profit. What I mostly wonder is whether their friends/family are getting access to ammo (for resale or not) that we don't get a shot at buying.

Hmm, I recall getting a 10% discount. We had a card we were issued that the cashier would swipe. In fact, if I recall correctly, family members could also use the discount card... last time I was a cashier there was in '96.

Yeah, I'm with you in theory sorta on getting first dibs, but then again, if you work at Walmart you're there all the time, so when ammo hits the shelf you're not gonna just let it get sold before you have a chance to stock up. I totally agree with limits on purchase, and Walmart is known to do that on items other than ammo... most recently the prepaid iPhones. So long as there is a limit and you don't have an associate buying out the whole stock, I don't see the problem with it ethically.... just sucks not being the guy lucky enough to get there in time. Now, if any Walmart associate is buying daily and reselling on Armslist (reference the ahole with two dozen bricks of federal Wally World ammo for $50 bucks a pop) the hammer of justice should be brought down on him and he needs to go back to the unemployment line.

I've always waited until my shift was over to buy ammo. As many of you well know, I have been giving ya'll a heads up went ammo arrives @ my Wally Store.

Truly a great service you're providing.  Do they still do employee discounts?  I can't remember how that worked.

Yes, but not on the majority of food items. Junk food qualifies for 10% discount. Edited by ArmyVeteran37214

Little miffed at Walmart today. 1 of 2 locations equal distance apart showed they had 100rnd packs available. I know they only stock during the day (this location at least). I get there at 7am as normal. There's 4 guys in front of me. The sporting goods guy rolls out the cart and starts his tax stamping.

When he finishes he asks the first fellow what he'd like. He says 223 obviously. Walmart rep pulls out 3 100 round boxes that are stamped. But he pulls them out of a box which has what appears to be Winchester .308 in it. Sells it to the guy and then goes to the next customer. Next guy also wants .223. "That was it" is the response.

Now wait a minute... how are there just three loose boxes? Seems to me there should be at least 6 total unless someone got some special treatment and bought three the evening before or it's stashed behind the counter someplace. Now granted, I wouldn't have gotten any because early bird gets the worm but the 2nd guy in line just got hosed.

But, lets face it. If I came in the night before and they had it, I would have asked to buy some.

Why would you think there should be 3 more boxes? Many times they ship less then a full case and ues what ever boxes they have.

I figured a big outfit like Walmart only handled whole cases of ammo per store, especially when they know how popular the item is. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying...at what point in the supply chain does it make sense to stop and bust open a case of ammo that will never hit the shelf just to send a store only 3 boxes?

I have yet to see that to be the case, when it comes to ammo shipments. Every case of ammo that I've seen arrive is factory sealed. The factory seal is only broken when the associate open the case to affix the tax stamps and sell to customers. Now if the case is damaged in shipment, then maybe I can see your theory being possible. If I'm not mistaken, the dc loaders are supposed to place ammo and other hazardous items on or near the floor of the trailer, but that's just my assumption.

You are correct, however there are some items that arrive in break pack boxes. Usually those items are for HBA, Cosmetics and Stationary.

I worked at a walmart for a few years during highschool. Granted thats been more than 15 years ago... but I never saw crated items loose shipped. it always came in bulk and then broken down for individual sale. As BigK said, I don't see a distribution center trying to evenly spread out ammo box by box. they are just going to start at the top of the orders and ship till its gone. if they have loose boxes at the distro, its time to start watching the DVR.

I just found out the hard way that you can't trust their website. I was up at 6:30 checking walmart.com for stores with 7.63x39 and went straight to one that said they had it in stock. I re-checked while waiting in line and browsing TGO.

Nobody in front of me bought any and they were out when it was my turn. The employee said none came in, so I showed him the web page and he said you can't go by what their site says.

I check the shelves at Lebanon & Gallatin regularly. Haven't seen so much as one box on the shelf in months.

According to the clerk " it comes in at random times", leaves quicker than a minnow can swim a dipper. She said the get only a few ( 3 or so ) at a time. So much for bulk.

Are you in Knoxville?

Yessir. We're leaving tomorrow though. I thought about trying to organize something but just haven't had the time. We were only here for 5 days this trip so time was precious.

I should be back in May or June though.

ETA: I was actually in Johnson City for a few hours on Tuesday and I wondered if you were around. My GF's dad lives in Piney Flats so we met him for dinner up there.

Well, bulk here meaning a sealed box containing X number of boxes of a specific caliber. They don't usually get more than 1-2 of each caliber. Don't look at the shelves, talk to the employee and try to get there around 7am and 7-8pm. Trucks come daily so it's really more about "how often can you get to walmart" vs. finding out exactly when it arrives. Seeing as how you're in hartsville... that's a bit of a drive for you either direction. Might I suggest moving out of the two stoplight town? :D :D :D

I kid of course. Could be Red Boiling Springs! Or even Carthage!

:D  Well, I'd have a hard time arguing with that. Circumstances find me stuck here at the

moment. Like you said, could be worse. Maybe I can save up enough gas money to make it

over your way. I'll let you know so you can get the women & kids off the streets. LOL

I haven't been out your way in a very long time. 8 years maybe. I can't imagine it's changed much. I used to get a kick out of driving past the nuclear cooling tower out there. Creepy looking thing.

Not so at the Walmart I go to, I agree sometimes full cases do show up mostly shotgun shells, sometimes 9mm .40 and .45 in 50 and 100 packs. Most of the rifle ammo shows up in what you call "break packs" A few 20 round packs of different cal. so I guess they do break down full cases at the DC. I don't mean to disagree you AV, but I've watched them open the boxes and put the stamps on. Other then shotgun shells they get more break packs then full cases. We have a smaller Walmart, only one entrance, so we maybe getting the leftovers from the DC. I wish they would ship only full cases. Last time Tulammo 7.62x39 came in there were only 4 boxes of 20 rounds, I split them with the next guy in line that wanted some.

Hasn't changed a bit in that length of time. Downtown, pretty much deserted. Cooling tower still there tho, FWIW.
