Well Done, Travis

And he didn't even threaten to kill anyone.

And I'm not surprised :) Maybe the crazies have inspired more of the sane folks to speak up. If Travis has his own line in the sand, I don't expect him to talk about it.

Thanks for performing such a valuable service, Mike. If I ever sign up for a facebook account, please shoot me. :)

Not trying to be a bummer but I wonder if there are enough changeable minds on guns and some other hot-button issues, that it is even remotely cost-effective to bother with dialogue? Or at least the kind of dialogue intended to convert "anti-gun" or "gun-neutral" to a pro-gun stance?

I was anti-gun in the 1970's and 1980's. Gradually shifted to pro-gun over about 5 years starting about 1990. Finally reached the "diode avalanche breakdown threshold" when a violent unstable redneck-from-hell moved in next door and there wasn't any good way to run him off, so I finally bought a gun for family defense if he ever "went off" in our direction. Once I had a gun of my own didn't want any politician messing with my own gun so the rest of the conversion was fast and painless.

Have watched and participated in numerous back-and-forth gun control discussions from even back in the pre-www compuserve days. At the moment can't recall even a single instance where all those wasted bytes caused even one change of heart on the issue. Maybe there are people "in the middle" or "on the other side" who are convinceable by logical argument, dunno. I've seen so few people flip as I did, actually change world-view, that I wonder if changeable people might be vanishingly rare commodities. Perhaps the ONLY practical way to create more pro-gun voters, is to somehow create more gun owners? After an anti-gun person has his own gun, self-interest takes over and logical argument is no longer necessary. But maybe not even that is accurate, as seen by so many rich'n'famous anti-gunners who make personal exception for themselves, because they NEED their gun, but none of the peons need a gun.

One avenue of argument that is more real-world practical and might work even if you can't realistically convert anti-gunners into pro-gunners-- It is not warm and fuzzy, but coldly logical and POSSIBLE to express without hysteria and threats. Perhaps it is counter-productive, or perhaps not. This tack taken by Mike at Sipsey Street Irregulars-- I'm not rattling swords or talking revolution. Merely mentioning that Mike presents a very pragmatic logical argument which doesn't try to convince people to love guns (text at following link)-- It boils down to another kind of self-interest argument. Maybe not effective and decidedly not warm and fuzzy, but not precisely "hysterical angry nutcase" either.
