My First Failure!

Call me special, but I've never had a failure of any kind when I've been at the range. That is until today. Took my new XD9 for it's first spin and about 100 rnds into it, it happened. Pulled the trigger and pfff. The squib stuck just past the chamber in the barrel. I was running through some aging carry ammo, HST 124 +P. I say aging, but it was only about 9 mo. old. Gave me pause on the HST for a minute, but I think I'll still carry it.

Good thing you used that ammo on the range, and not elsewhere.

I have a brand new XD(M) you can use for back-up.

an ammunition failure such as a squib does not have anything to do with the gun it was shot through.

I think I might contact the ammo maker and let them know what happened.

I agree with that. I would not use any more out of that box. I would contact the company as well.

Yeah, I was really surprised it was the HST +p. Supposed to be some good stuff. I guess it's bound to happen sooner or later no matter how tight manufacturer tolerances are. BTW all the rest of them wen off without a hitch.

Big recall on HST a few years ago, Police had same problem and Fedral got it back

and sold to public with large stickers on it (For practice only) check and see if it was

peeled off if you have box. Federal can also tell by lot# on box.

I'd heard that but I had gotten these form www.streichers.com and were supposed to be the new lots. I had called about it first. I'm pretty sure it was just the law of averages. It's still a good reminder to never assume, whether it be gun, ammo, or whatever.

Over all of the years I've shot, I have never had a squib. I've had some rounds that wouldn't let the handgun go into battery and I've had rounds that were way hotter than they should have been. You just never know what you will get in even "quality" ammunition.

But I've seen one... in a Glock 19. Shooter didn't realize it and followed up w/ a bang. It pushed both bullets out and bulged the barrel but didn't blow up the gun. A new barrel later and it (G19) was as good as new. But he was lucky, I wouldn't want to push my luck that far.

I think that ammo was Gold Dot but I may be mistaken.

I was lucky I guess. The round was so weak that it didn't even cycle the slide. It didn't pop just made a weak pfff sound and nothing happened. I hate to think what could have been!

Sounds like it may not have had any powder in it.

Would just the primer have enough uumpf to push the bullet into the rifling?

The primer does have enough power to push the bullet into the rifling but usually not far enough to chamber the next round.

It didn't cycle the slide. The casing wasn't bulged or deformed either. It had a lot of black residue on the case however.

That would be a squib load, no powder just primer.
