I think the Squirrels know that Deer Season is over :)

Having Struck out on Deer, I went back for some Squirrels today.

Had been seeing literally 20-30 a day over the last few weeks plus an occasional Rabbit.

 

NOTHING was out in the woods today.

It was a little colder though...Frost on the Ground etc.

But even when it warmed up I didn't see anything.

 

Is there a "magic temperature" I should look for through the rest of the Season?

The little buggers torment my aussie shephard by running along the other side of the fencing on the ground teasing her.

What really makes you mad is almost running over 4 or 5 of them on the way back home.

What I've found works well for squirrels is I do exactly what I do when I go deer hunting, I just take a .22 instead.

I know that feeling. Sit in the woods with the 30.06 and have a herd of squirrels run about the tree tops. Sit the next week with a 22 and see deer.

Thats the way it use to be. I don't eat sguirrel so I don't hunt em any more.

We use to hunt them to add to the stews, not now.

I saw a couple in my backyard today. They were quite lucky to be out of range.

Used to kill 'em with a Daisy bb/pelletgun back when i was 10 or 12. But then, they was considered pests( ate all the fruit off the fruit trees we had in the back yard). Where i live now, i have yet to see a squirrel. I see lots of rabbits though. And i'm out in the county, but in a subdivision.

I have more than you can shoot in a day, saving them for latter, rabbits also.

I was jogging at Riverpark here in Chattanooga a couple of weeks ago....There was one stretch near amnicola where I saw no fewer than 100 rabbits.  Could have filled the freezer with nothing more than a slingshot.

Well...I'm persistent if nothing else.

Went out in the rain Saturday. It was not too hard for the most part
Saw three squirrels about 20min before sunrise.
A bit too dark to shoot but I figured I must be in the right place so I waited.

Didn't see anything else. Worked the woods for four hours.
Still had fun
