M1 Garand 30-06 ammo?

Recommended Posts

What ammo is safe to use in the Garand? I have a 1941 receiver, 1944 bolt and 1953 LMR barrel. I have found some surplus 30-06 150g M2 ball made in Canada. Is current 30-06 to hot for this gun? I know American Eagle produces some 150g 30-06 for the Garand, but can't find any. I've tried to order from CMP, but I have no club affiliated membership, so can't order from them.

I have heard of some ordering an adjustable gas plug to shoot newer ammo I just load my own :

147-150 fmj  IMR 4895 to around 2700-2750 FPS

as long as the Canadian says somewhere BALL M2   your all set.

USPSA membership also will get you in the door with the CMP  not sure about IDPA or SASS though.

CMP recognized SASS ID so ordered 200rds of Greek 150g M2 ball for $98 + $12 shipping, about $0.55/rd. Thanks TGO. I may try reloading brass from this lot. I've never reloaded rifle rds except straight wall 45-70. I also checked and Brownell's has adjustable gas plug for $39, may try one later.
