Recently I have been cataloging all of my valuables in case they are ever stolen.  With some reservation I uploaded all of the pictures that I have taken so far to Photobucket in a private album.  I did this so  that if I am ever robbed or my house burns down I can always access this important information from any internet access point.  So far I've just done my guns and some business equipment.  I take at least one full picture of each item then zoom in and get a good clear shot of the serial number.  I also plan on doing all of my vehicles and their VIN #s.  I had a vehicle stolen several years ago and it took me hours to find something with the VIN# on it, this way I can give them the VIN and a picture of the vehicle in minutes.  Just thought that I would share and maybe inspire others as well to save themselves huge headaches down the road.

I keep important copies of many files on usenet after encrypting via truecrypt of course.  I also stash DVDr copies of the encrypted volume in places I have secure storage.  Saved my ass when we got burglarized a few years back, and you never know when you may wake up in a foreign country and need a copy of your passport to get home.

Older fashioned folks are probably better off storing printed photos in a box somewhere. Tech savvy people can get away with uploading them to the internet in various forms after encryption them. I agree that Truecrypt is probably the best bet here, then you can store them in Dropbox, FTP, etc.
