Sig caliber conversion kit?

I'm looking at picking up a police trade in Sig P229 that's chambered in .40.  I really have no desire to shoot .40 but the pistol is a good price. It's my intention to turn it into 4 different guns by purchasing a .357sig barrel since it uses the same mags, as well as 9mm and .22lr conversion kits. Does anyone have any experiance with Sig's conversion kits? Should I be concerned with mating new slides with used frames?  thanks

There are several different versions of caliber conversions. The 357 sig is just a barrel change. Getting the 9mm conversion and the 22lr is where you have to know what your ordering. I get really confused with the internal/ external extractor and all that.

Pick up the trade first and figure out where/when it was made, then you can order the correct conversion kits. The newer p229s all use the wider frame so that the slides are more interchangeable than some of the older p229s. I have a .40 conversion for mine on the way from sig and a separate p229 chambered in 22lr on the way so I can certainly let you know how it goes in the next few weeks. :)

I can tell you that I have run the .22 on my P220 and it works fine.  I can't say anything about the other conversions that you mentioned.

the early ones from the 90's were all German, not sure off the top of my head when it changed, i'm pretty sure they still make them in Germany they just don't get imported here very often

Ok, the new 229 in .22lr showed up yesterday (Thanks to David and Kev @ D&T for a simple and smooth transfer). The 229 "classic" is, as I had figured, based on the wider frame as well. So it would seem to reason that as long as you start with a 229 based on the wider frame (any 229 excluding the 9mm produced before the switch to the wider frame) any of the newer caliber x-change kits will work on it. One thing I noted in the box is that unlike the mosquito, the p229 classic chambered in 22lr receives sig's lifetime warranty.

 

 

 

 

I'll update again both when the .40 x-change kit arrives and when I get a few hundred rounds downrange on the new assemblies.

thanks for the update, if i understand it correctly, the newer 229's with the .40 frame take mags labeled "229-1" when using the 9mm caliber conversion, going tomorrow to check out the trade in :pleased:

Yeah, the giveaway on the new 9mm mags is that they get slightly wider a few rounds from the top. (all the factory mags are labeled 229-1 but some aftermarket mags may not be) if the wider mag will fit into the mag well it is the wider frame. (all .40 and .357 229s should be on the wider frame as that is why the frame was widened to begin with)

I have had a 22 LR kit for the 229 for a few years. Works fine with snappy ammo such as mini mags. It's more fun w/ the kit to convert the mags to hold 15 rounds & the follower that holds the slide back after the last round. Mine doesn't shoot quite to POA but I don't use it enough to bother trying to fix it.

I've now sent over 500 rounds through the pair, in every combination I could come up with. All three slides have functioned perfectly on both frames. Even managed to accidentally send a 9mm round down the .40 barrel by grabbing the wrong gun/mag combo one session(just my luck, it was the night of my HCP test). Luckily nothing was damaged in the process other than my pride, and the .40 continues to function fine after a thorough inspection and reassembly. Both the centerfire setups have eaten everything I have fed them including some cheapy factory loads, the .22 in typical rimfire fashion is a little more picky eater, but functions wonderfully with CCI mini-mags and acceptably for practice with federal bulk.

I've got the 22 conversion for my 220 Dark Elite and I've been pretty happy with it. It seems to be a little bit picky with ammo.
