Must vent, doctors...

I've spent way more time than I've wanted to recently in doctors offices.  It all started when I tried to get some life insurance.  Insurance company came out to the house and took a blood and urine sample.  Then they contact me and tell me that I have high cholesterol along with a couple of other issues.  So I make an appointment with a local doctor.  I hate going to doctors, I probably have not seen a doctor without being in dire pain in 15 years.  So I go to my appointment and there is a gun buster sign on the door.  That was the first thing that angered me.  Then I get into the doctors office and the doctor himself is anything but good role model when it comes to good health.  He's saying things like I need to be in the gym 6 days a week at the minimum, and I need to be running everyday.  I don't appreciate the hypocrisy.  He also will not give me direct answers to my questions.  I wanted my a plan of action to address issues and he kept changing the subject.  I wanted information on foods that I should or should not be eating and again he wouldn't give me direct answers.  But he has sent me for a variety of others tests, each with a co-pay.  I'm tired of it.  I got myself on a workout routine at home, You Tube has some great fitness vids if anyone is interested.  I kind of feel like I should have just turned around when I saw the gun buster sign on the door.  I know I need to eat right and exercise. I don't need to pay someone to tell me that.  BTW young guys, a steady diet of cheese burgers, pizza, and beer will catch up with you eventually.

In my opinion, Dr.'s are only the "practice" of treating the symptoms, not the problem.  I too have battled high triglycerides, cholesterol, and weight.  My thyroid Dr. kept saying that I needed to lose some weight, but I got a canned response of "eat better and workout" when I asked how.  Then I explained I did eat better, and worked out 5 days a week for 3 months, and lost nothing.  VERY FRUSTRATING.

Good luck with your new lifestyle and the exercise.

Sounds like you need to find another doc.  I recently passed the threshold of high cholesterol and my doc provided lots of information on diet and exercise.  He's also a fairly young guy who works for a living and has 4 young children so he understands that while the "only 30 mins/day" exercise thing sounds easy, in practice it isn't.

Have a look at at this... http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/chol/chol_tlc.pdf   It's certainly not rocket science, but some good basic info.

I am a firm believer that you should interview your doctors just like you would interview a new employee. It's important that you're both on the same page and can work together to find solutions that work. It's important that your doctor really LISTENS to you and responds to what you are saying and not just a canned answer. Fire this doctor and find another. As far as the weight loss...the most important thing to understand is that when you find something that works, you have to have the mindset that the change is for life and NOT a week, a month or a year. Good luck.
