Sorry for the vauge title...

 

OK...Standard receiving hitch on a truck or SUV.  I've seen these metal 2' x4' (size?) trays that attach to the hitch and provide an extra carrying platform...I would provide a picture but if I could do that...I would know what it is called.

I've been thinking of buying one as part of my "bug out" plan. Since I'd want to have extra fuel with me I don't want to carry it inside of my SUV.

 

That said, I'd also buy a cover/tarp so not everyone can see what I'm carrying! ;)

My wife has one on her SUV and it comes in handy quite often.

Having it covered up would help, but locking it to your vehicle would be a big plus.

It reminds me of when we were in Somalia. (a real world apocalypse environment) While on convoy delivering supplies the people would all run to the road when they saw vehicles coming and if you were going slow enough and had anything on the outside of the vehicle they would steal it.

I saw many a case of MREs, water, etc snagged that way.

Something that would be more spensive, at least if bought new, but might come in handy, would be the hitch-mounted electric-lift scooter carriers. Made for toting old folks' scooters to the mall or whatever. It is hitch-mounted but at least if toting a scooter, requires a certain class of hitch, can't recall the classes. I just recall when looking for a more practical vehicle for dad a couple of years ago, many of the hitches on light-weight inexpensive small SUV's and compact station wagons-- The smaller cheaper vehicles that came with factory hitches did not have a big enough class to tote a scooter hauler without maybe breaking off. But it would depend on how much weight you would be hauling I guess-- The scooter probably puts the hurt on the hitch a lot more than the hauler itself.

 

They wire up to the trailer wiring and you push a button to lower the thing to the ground, then run the scooter up on it, then raise it back up and close a little back gate so the scooter can't escape in transit. The electric lift feature would of course be useful for any heavy load, not just scooters.

 

Dunno if it is specific to that kind of hauler, but when I had to take the scooter hauler off old dad's giant chevy pick-em-up truck when we were trading it in on a vehicle easier for old folks to climb into-- It had been permanently mounted to the truck for about three years and was dang hard to get it off. About thought I'd have a heart attack before I finally got the thing wiggled out of the hitch. Took a whole lot of wiggling and jerking to pull it out, but otoh there wasn't much chance the thing would have come off on the highway. :)

 

I'm just thinking, people who need scooter haulers tend to be old, and they eventually get to a point where the scooter hauler is no longer necessary, so the things might be fairly easy to find used if you look around. In fact, can't recall if dad ever got rid of his, or if it is still sitting by his back deck where I removed it from his truck.
