Cellphone Jammers - Illegal

If guns can be banned in a business, why can't cell phones?  A jammer could be used to restrict phone service in specific areas.  Do we have a greater right to cell phone use than we do to bear arms?  I'm not saying this should be done but just asking the question.  Certainly a cell phone can be a useful tool just as a firearm can but there seems to be little outrage over gunbuster signs.  

 

I would always choose the "No Phones" section of a restaurant if I had that option.  A compromise.  It seems like a reasonable solution to the annoyance of being forced to listen to someone's loud and often foul phone conversations.  If it would work for phones, why not a "No Guns" area in a restaurant?  That would be better than no guns at all.  I'd be in favor of a "No Screaming Snotty Nosed Kids" section in a restaurant as well.

Jammer's don't work that way. There is no garauntee that it will not effect signals outside of a prescribed area, and one has no right to limit cell phone use off their property, as has been suggested in other threads (ie:traffic). If a business wants to keep cell usage down they can put up a sign telling patrons to stow it, and if they don't, kick them out. A hell of a lot simpler than getting permission from the FCC to broadcast a jammer or building a faraday cage into your walls. I don't see why people get so worked up about other folks talking on the phone. Cell phones are hear to stay. Get over it.

Eh, I have a cell phone. And I also have ham radio. If I had a issue with my cell phone, I could easily use ham..... And remember, if something major happens and power outages ETC, no one will be able to get that emergency call out.

 

I love the convince of my cell phone, but at the same time I hate it. Sometimes I wish I could turn of the Voice part of my Iphone but keep the data/text.

Turn off the ringer and use vibe.  Don't answer calls.  Use the phone for YOUR convenience, not someone else's.

 

And, if you're somewhere you don't want to be found, take the battery out.

The FCC kicked em off the grid a while back amazing enough Jammers got hot and heavy @ 6 years ago.They were sold heavily overseas for various use as their laws are way diff then ours and were never deemed illegal, Europe is funny as theres no such thing as illegal intercepts or jams in many countries where bugging is rampant. A lot of folks were on the prowl to sell the Jammers as both Jammers and countermeasures to help neutralize  IED's and the like. They do work,were inexpensive and they took the same path as GPS Jammers...banished forever from the masses in the US.

I saw someone demo a cell jammer near a coffee house that was close to a school prior to them being banished. Seeing the students getting up in unison holding white macbooks doing the i lost my signal walk was funny to watch,especially when the jam would occur about every 10 mins...It was like a flash mob before  flash mob was created

As I recall they are legal for use in hospitals, airports, and a few other select places where phones can interfere with some (usually antique) equipment.  

 

I would not mind having one that had about a 100 foot radius in my car but as you noted, I can't DO that no matter how many people get killed from yakkity drivers.

Unless someone in that theater did not get an emergency call that something had happened to someone important to them.  Then you might would feel a bit bad.

 

Wouldn't they have known that when they paid extra money for a ticket to enter the theater with the device in place?
