There is a sign on Briley that has the very same words, you are timed on the lane strips, stuff works.

You know, the first time I ever saw one of these signs was about 16 years ago on my way to the Abingdon Cinemall (haven't been in years, used to be an amazing place for opening night movies). I had this crazy vision of a police biplane coming down over my car with someone on a bull horn "PULL THE VEHICLE OVER!!" Wasn't until sometime during the movie I realized they would probably just get a picture of my license plate and send me the ticket.

Practice has been around forever.  They may do it differently now but used to they would use a stop watch to time you between two points.  From my understanding it is very inaccurate.

All they do is measure the time between two points and convert fps into MPH. Normally they will already have it calculated on a chart.its accurate as long as your good with a stopwatch and your math is right.

That has always been my concern.  The stop watch leaves a large margin or error, not to mention that the distance is being measured from several hundred feet away at best. Additionally I've seen some cops that would certainly have problems with that kind of math, not a cop slam, I suck at math myself, but we are dealing with cops here not mathematicians.

In CA there are marks painted on the road every few hundred yards were those signs are for a marker above I assume.

I think there was some case law discussing the variables between reaction times of the police with clocks, angles of viewing and how they could have an astronomical impact on the estimated speed.

Accurate enough.  Been in practice on the Cherohala Skyway for years.  Generally reserved for those FAR exceeding the speed limit... such that timing them to +/- 1.0 seconds still establishes breaking the law.  If you fight it in court, they produce training records for the officers involved that essentially classify them as experts for the task.

As far as the math they could easily have a chart

 

a known distance and time to = speed.

Same distance an and various times listed to show different speeds.

 

I agree there could be variable, but if a person is exceeding in a high amount the variable would be decreased.

 

However, most have radar/laser guns that just give a number.
