Question for the LinkedIn experts....

If I get a notice that "So and So wants to connect with you on LinkedIn" , did that request come directly from So and So himself? Or, is this some sort of automated thing that LinkedIn thinks we are compatible ?

OK, so it's either authentic, spam, or automated. Got it!

:) Normally, it is someone you know, have worked with, business dealings, school, etc. I, personally, have not received a request from automation or straight spam.

It's not automated.  People select you, but it doesn't mean you know them or they know you.  So, I'd call that spam.  Check out who is requesting you and if you share any level of contact with them.  Otherwise, if you can't figure out how you know the person, then it's likely a recruiter.

BigPoppa...do you see the level of restraint I'm showing here?

I just want it noted.  See you tomorrow.

I get them all the time. I hit delete weather or not I know them. I figure if you want to keep in contact with me. Just pick up the dang phone.

If it is a single message then the person requested it. I get requests from old friends regularly. They come one at a time and I have to click an icon at the top of the page to see them.

If the request is in with a group then it is the "people you might know" recommendation. A good way to tell is if the request is on the home page and not in your incoming mail, then it was not sent by any particular person.

They link groups of people together based on who you are currently linked with. They assume that if you are linked to two people and those two people have a link in common then you must also know the common link.

It is a good site for networking and finding work. I know I have used it in the distant past to find out what was coming available.

Amen.  And, if I don't have you on my contact list, don't expect me to answer the phone.  Leave a damn message for crying out loud -- that's what the answering machine is for!

Then why would you have a Linkedin profile in the first place? Just curious.
