In the market for a new Gun Safe- a weight question

Hi guys-

I'm looking into buying a new safe in the next few weeks, and have a question regarding weight.

I don't have a concrete - based floor or slab to put the safe on, so the safe will be inside the home on the floor.

The house floors are 'suspended', and by that I mean there is a crawlspace under the whole house.

Considering an empty safe of the size I'm looking at will weigh somewhere in the neigborhood of 550 - 600 lbs empty, would you have any reservations about an object of that weight sitting on the floor of your home with nothing more to support it?  Would you figure out some way to shore up the floor underneath from the crawlspace, or not worry about it?

Thanks-

Mine weighs about 650 and although it didn't bow the floor, directly under the house I stacked a few blocks and drove a little wedge between the top block and the joist. Even though you most likely won't need extra support, if you can get under your house easily it sure wouldn't hurt. My safe is kinda big so I keep ammo in it too. A few hundred 12 guage shells and all the other goodies add a lot of weight.

If you're really concerned bout it, go in your crawl and look at your floor joists. You can see which way they are running and their spacing (anywhere from 12" to 24" but probably 16"). If you can position the safe to span 2 of them, it will distribute the weight a bit better. You can measure from an HVAC air duct boot in the crawl to a joist, then measure the same distance in the house from that matching vent. That gets you on top of one joist. Then measure out the joist spacing to the next joist.
