Received this 30-06

I got this from a family member for Christmas and I'm perplexed by it.

The only part I know the make of is the Weaver scope. The rest, action, bolt and stock have no markings. The safety says Mark II and the barrel has a 30-06 marking.

Can anyone chime in with details based on the pics?

the long wood and action make me think this is a seriously professionally reworked military surplus gun, but I could be way off.  Ive not seen long wood quite like that on anything else (??).   Which might mean a parts gun, a little of this and that put together well in a custom shop.

Looks like a 1903 with an after market safety (mark II) and sporterized stock. Look under the scope base for markings Edited December 27, 2012 by Batman

Reasonably sure you've got a reworked 1903A3 in a Mannlicher stock.  She looks cherry, I'm jealous.  Definitely a nice Xmas gift.

I was going to say 1903 as well, with some professional bubba'ing.

Yup, its a 1903A3 that has been sporterized.  The firing pin rod, bolt sleeve, bolt (mod for scope) and extractor are all military.  I would have to see the barrel out of the stock to tell if its the military barrel that has been sporterized.   Appears that the scope would be an El Paso, TX made Weaver K2.5 or K3.0.  The mount and rings look to be Redfield.

 

If you can read Remington and the serial numbers with the scope base mounted - - - then you could, might have a 1903A4.  :stunned:

Its a nice, well done sporterized 1903A3.  Could be either a Remington or Smith Corona.

O MAN, SWEET rifle, 30-06 is a great round, bit of recoil, but not bad.

Looks like a dandy custom 03 sporter. I expect it is a better rifle than most anything available new today; definitely a lot cooler!

took it out and shot it this past weekend.  i suppose i expected more recoil with the 18" barrel, but it was really manageable.  scope shot high right, but I dialed it back in.

 

appreciate everyone's feedback.......it brings a better appreciation for the rifle!

after some careful looking, i was able to make out the bottom 2/3 of the serial number, enough to verify the accurate number.  and after some googling.....

 

it's a Smith Corona 1903A3 made in Sept of 1943
