Cracked tumbler

Recommended Posts

I just got one of my dad's old brass tumblers full of media and .308 brass.  I fired it up and media poured out onto the floor.  I found a crack on the tumbler body where it seems something has struck it.  Is this worth repairing?  Even if possible?  Would an epoxy type glue fix this given its vibrating nature?

epoxy and duct tape can fix anything!

It's certainly worth a try since today's epoxies are much better than they used to be. Regarding duct tape, have you ever tried the Gorilla Tape brand? It's some super strong stuff for sure.

If that doesn't work you may want to see if you can get a replacement bowl from the company. It might be cheaper than a new tumbler. Edited by Trekbike

I think Ill try it.  Ill drill small holes at the ends of the cracks to prevent future cracking and give the epoxy a shot.

You on the right track... Drill the holes then place tape on the inside work the epoxy in from the outside and let it cover a good area around the crack. When that dries pull the tape and apply epoxy from the inside. I just had one given to me that had a crack and this is what i did and let it run for several hours with no further issues. Good luck. If it fails i'll head to harbor Freight with 20% off coupon and buy a new one for $45.

you can probably also just find some sort of container that is about right, drill a hole in it, and use it to replace the cracked bowl.  Heck a large margarine tub with a hole in it would probably fit many round bowl tumblers and work just fine....   if you wanted a 10 cent fix.

UPDATE:

I drilled holes, prepped the area, an craked open a new tube of epoxy I had laying around only to find one side had somehow set-up.  So I gave some high temp RTV a try.  Suprizingly its holding up well.  Hope this might help someone else.
