AR extractor o-ring

Is it necessary? Bolt came with the o-ring separate. (BCM BCG) I thought I read somewhere that it was mainly for full auto and a semi-auto may not need it. What do you guys think? I do have 60 rounds through it with no probs. I know 60 isn't a lot but it's what I had.

Things that aren't broken don't need fixing. Starting to see BCM's with "black extractor insert" being advertised, etc. Just strengthens force on extractor lip, but if more force ain't needed it ain't needed. BCM already uses a different post and stronger spring in the thing, even without the o ring. - OS

As Dolomite said, they are not necessary, they just give added strength for extraction.  I run the BCM extractor upgrade kit on all of my ARs just for the added comfort of knowing I have a nice strong extractor.  If you are running a SBR, then I think the upgrade kit (w/ o-ring) would be particularly useful to avoid any extraction problems.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate you guys. Mine came with the black insert. It didn't give any trouble through 60 rounds. Again I know not much but it's all I had at the time. Maybe ammo will be available again someday soon. I'm itchin to really give it a workout.
