Retro AR project

Here's a pseudo "retro" AR rifle project I recently finished.

DSCF1499.jpg

The lower is a DPMS. I added an ergo grip because they are more comfortable than stock,

and I decided it would still be "retro enough" for me...

Upper is an older Colt, it appears to have had the barrel replaced with one that was in the post '94 config. with a blind pinned/welded flash suppressor,

and the ground off bayo lug. I cut/split off the old flash suppressor, and replaced it with the old A2 birdcage style.

It also came with the groovy old triangular hand guards, and I changed them out to the A2 style.

I haven't actually decided if I want to complete the de-banning, and replace the FSB just to have the bayo lug.

Though restoring all the 'evil' features would be a fitting way to celebrate the end of the Clinton's political era... :D

I basically have that hanging on my wall for sale. I didnt realize it was now "retro."

I expected a real full blown retro AR, with triangular handguards, no forward assist and 3 prong flash hider. I thought it would be cool to build one of those.

I really tried to stick with the triangular hand guards, but they were too flimsy for me...

I still have 'em though. All you would need is a 20 rd. mag. and those back on and you're about there for an M16A1 styled rifle.

I dunno, I may or may not hang on to it though, without the spent case deflector, it causes more of a problem for me because I'm a sinistral shooter.

A buddy of mine got a good laugh at a couple of perfectly round .223 case-sized hickeys I got the other day...:D

on the .458socom forum there is a guy that makes custom stocks for the ar and one he made was part wood (walnut i think) and part synthetic/polymer, it looked really awesome

That would be curlymaple42. He does great work! I had him make me two backings for european deer head mounts and they look great. One was walnut and the other a light maple.

Be warned though, 458socomforums is under attack right now by a superhacker and the site is full of porn links. The owner changed web designers and thinks the old one is either helping the hacker or is the hacker using a back door.

If anyone is interested I have Curlymaples email address. He makes solid wood AR stocks or veneers that will fit the ACE skeleton stocks.

I would post a link but the site is so hard to navigate right now until the webguru cleans it up I don't want to try.

Nice start.

I would get rid of the ergo grip and put a period correct one on.

I would also get the correct A1 stock for it if you are going to run an A1 upper receiver.

I was going to post pictures of my 1968 Colt SP1, but Dan just informed me that its not a "project" since Colt did all the work, not me :)

It is interesting that your A1 Front site base doesn't have a bayonet lug. I don't think I have ever seen one that was removed on one of these rifles. Speaking of which I have a small diameter front site base in excellent condition with intact bayonet lug. I am looking for one without a bayonet lug for a retro carbine 649 carbine let me know if you want to trade.

Aslo as to historical correctness I think it would be cool to put a M16A2 grip on it then it would look like one of the A1s that had the furniture upgraded. That was done quite often in the post VN war era. Also its a lot cheaper to come up with a A2 pistol grip to complete your A2 furniture set than it is to find an A1 pistol grip and Buttstock.

Cheers
