Engraving the SBR question

Recommended Posts

I have done some research, but am most confused by this part. What is required to be engraved, where on the receiver and how do you get it done?

I believe the manufacturer engraves it.

Edit: Misunderstood the question. I have no idea. Don't know much about NFA weapons.

Maybe Joe will chime in here, but I believe there are places locally that can engrave the necessary information for you. Any lower must be engraved once it is registered as an SBR. Owner information is included in the indicia.

The requirements are, the manufacturer (you, if you are building it) and the city, state where it was built. The engraving goes on the lower and has to be visible. Most gunsmiths can send you to someone that can engrave the info for you.

That's correct. Name, city, state.

There is a minimum height/depth too.

i am no expert but ATF form 1 (5320.1) states on page 1 of the instructions item i, if an existing firearm is being modified into a NFA enter existing serial # and name and address of manufacter. DO NOT ALTER OR MODIFY THE EXISTING SERIAL #. if made from parts you must put your name and address.

could never get a straight answer

i guess you could read it both ways.

It needs to be engraved "Your Name Springfield,TN" unless you are purchasing something that has already been registered.

DO NOT let someone send you to a trophy shop!!! Trust me I know :D If you are going to do it, it's a good idea to send it off the same time you send your paperwork so you're not technically sending a NFA weapon at that point and you'll have fun faster...

If you'd like to see something let me know when you'll be at work and I'll stop by.

Last thing, send it here to be engraved http://www.orion-arms.com/new/

Yes, read it both ways and do it both ways. You "DO NOT ALTER OR MODIFY THE EXISTING SERIAL" but you do add your engraving if you are turning it into a SBR because you are the manufacturer of the SBR.

Here's a couple good links:

This is very handy information. Thanks for the link; I may have to put that to use sometime soon. :D

well I called the BATF using a number from the link provided by thorn. because I was afraid that I had messed up my form 1. the lady I spoked with said that I was modifying was an existing weapon and no name, city and state was needed. and if I choose to do so, recommended that I do not do it until I had approval to make modifications. and that most of the form 1's she gets have that box empty. felt better:)

BUT THEN,

she says I need to talk with the person (specialist)that has my form 1 and if she thinks it is a problem, I have 30 days after i get my paperwork back to fix it. of course the woman who has my form 1 was not at her desk so I left a message.:)

like I said before can not seem to get a straight anwser and i will know for sure in a few weeks.

also just a note they said it now taking about 8 weeks they have gotten very busy.

You have just encountered one (of many) confusing interpretations of NFA.

When I read NFA, my understanding is that if you are registering an existing firearm that already has manufacturer info on it, there is no need to put Joe Blow, Winchester TN.

Now, you call NFA branch on any given day and ask that question to 10 people, 5 may tell you that you dont have to engrave your personal info.

The other 5 will tell you that you DO have to engrave.

Wait 3 days and call back with the same question; different answers...

While I personally feel that the law does not require your info to be engraved, we recommend it.

(actually, we recommend new receivers on Form 4s, but thats a different story)

Why a Form 4 for a new receiver?

Why a Form 4 for a new receiver?

Because the item is already on a Form 3 with the dealer, and a Form 4 is required to transfer from the dealer to the individual.

There's a letter clarifying this http://hkpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37062 There is some conflicting info to this but it is prior to this letter. Like Joe is saying it is better to cover yourself.

There are also some Noveske lowers that have left as registered SBR lowers, Joe may know of some other factory stuff???

a trophy shop can do it properly

Verbal checked into this back in Kentucky and was told by a local shop that they could but that they would have to do it "free hand" ... which sort of scares me.

Do you know of anyone in Tennessee, or more precisely in middle TN, that would do this and do it with the lower locked into a fixture and engraved a little more precisely?

My friend had one done at a trophy shop near Bell Road/Murfreesboro Rd. It looks factory perfect. I think they did it while he waited. I'll track down the name and phone # of the place that did it.

That would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tried to call him , no answer but will update later. Orion bought out Tom Sawyer which did fantastic work but they are far away and expensive.

Ended up sending mine out to Spike's for them to engrave it. Good price, fastest return shipping I've seen (both locally and from online sources like Orion), exact location I wanted it marked, and I know what their work looks like. Just flip my receiver over and check the factory marks for proof.

I had someone who used to be a member of this forum do mine. Check with some local shops/gunsmiths to see if they know anyone who can do it.
