Some new ammo for me...

Recommended Posts

Last year I traded for a nice Sig 220. For various reasons I haven't had much time to put in it. I did buy several different types of fmj and jhp rounds just to test for proper functioning but then it was put in the safe where it has been resting.

Next summer we are taking a trip to Alaska to celebrate our 20th anniversary. My goal is to acquire a g20 before then but if I don't I will carry something I already have. Looking around I decided the 220 is what I will carry on our hiking trips.

With that in mind I decided I needed to test a few fairly heavy loads. I ordered in some Buffalo Bore 255 gr hard cast. While I was at it I decided to order something for 2 legged creatures as well. I got a couple boxes of 200 gr Hornady TAP.

Although I shoot a fair amount of 40 I mostly train with 9mm and my carry pieces are .357 Sig. I've always been part of the flat and fast club. Sitting here inspecting the rounds I have to admit these big lunks are a bit mesmerizing...

Can't wait to get to the range on Wednesday.

240 Sierra JHC  loaded @ around 900 FPS avg.   ( accurate #7 and worked up for my pistol )  great for Bowling Pins out of a 5 1/2" single port compensator 1911

10mm is a whole nother addiction especially for reloaders  135 Noslers (1500fps)  all the way up to 200 XTP @ 1150

either way you go .45 or 10mm  plenty of energy to go around.

i have several friends that live or worh in alaska. they all seem to carry glock 20s loaded with 200 grain tc fmjs a couple have had to use them .while i am not a hudge glock fan when i fish/hunt in alaska thats what i carry as well all my friends cant be wrong i would carry an m16 if i could as i am not very good with a pistol any more.the extra vshots in a glock 20 imo makes it a winner as does the 15 pounds in the mag penetration is great as well with the 200 grain tc fmj

David, I agree. I'm going to keep an eye out for a G20 as it was my first choice. We aren't going until probably in July so I have a bit of time.

In the meantime I thought I would begin some testing in case I don't find what I want. I'm also considering something in .41 mag although that is much more of a wish. I need to stay practical if I can...

Here is what I can tell you. The people in Alaska don't bother with .45's. It used to be 44mag was everything in AK and you could buy 44mag in the grocery stores. Surprisingly the 10mm has developed a following there, it's not at the 44mag popularity yet. Remember the slower a HP is traveling the less it will expand. Even the cherished 230gr Gold Dots have been known not to expand. In a Grizzly I would be more concerned with getting 20" of penetration more than expansion though.
