Police shoot man as he beats toddler

TURLOCK, California (AP) -- Police killed a 27-year-old man as he kicked, punched and stomped a toddler to death despite other people's attempts to stop him on a dark, country road, authorities said.

Investigators on Sunday were trying to establish the relationship between the suspect and the child they say he killed Saturday night. The Stanislaus County coroner said the boy appeared to be between 1 and 2 years old based on his size, according to county sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh.

"It's been a long night of wondering, 'Why?' -- not only for the officers and the passers-by who stopped and tried to help out, but for anyone. Why would somebody do this?" Singh said.

Singh said the coroner does not plan to confirm the identities of the suspect and victim until Monday. Because his injuries were so severe, the child will have to be identified through a blood or DNA test, he said.

The suspect had a child's car seat in the back of his four-door pickup truck. The truck caught the attention of an elderly couple at 10:13 p.m. Saturday because it was stopped in the two-lane road facing the wrong direction, Singh said.

As they got closer, the couple saw the man beating the toddler behind his truck and throwing the child on the ground, according to Singh. Two or three other cars stopped, an unusual number to be passing through the remote area surrounded by a dairy, a cow pasture, a cornfield and a farmhouse, he said.

"What we got from witnesses is he was punching, slapping, kicking, stomping, shaking," Singh said. "They tried to intervene and get involved, but their efforts really didn't have an effect. The suspect was engaged in what he was doing. He just pushed them off and went back to it."

A sheriff's helicopter responding to emergency calls from the area landed in a cow pasture at 10:19 p.m. carrying a Modesto police officer who shot the man to death after he refused an order to stop beating the child, Singh said.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the toddler, who was not breathing when they arrived. The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No children within the dead boy's age range have been reported kidnapped or missing in Stanislaus County, Singh said.

The killing happened on Bradbury Road about 10 miles west of Turlock, a city about halfway between Sacramento and Fresno.

If CA would allow more people to carry, perhaps it could have ended sooner. In either event, someone could have done something more. Smash the guy's head with a tire iron, a rock, something. Not just "try" to intervene then stop when he pushes you away.

No child deserves that. Any rational adult should have stepped in and taken the beating. If there were a group of people, there is no way that they would have been subdued by an individual

I saw this on another forum and I'll tell ya'll like I told them... If I ever come up on a scene like this I will run out of bullets and give my wallet to anyone willing to go buy more bullets so I can keep shooting the SOB. I don't care who it is, where it is, or what I can or can't do legally, I would die before letting any child be beat in my presence.

The thing is, you would be justified in this situation. Remember, you can use deadly force to save a person from death or severe bodily harm if that person would be justified in using deadly force to save them selves. In this case, defense of a toddler would more than merit the use of deadly force.

Sure you might get charged and you might have to hire a liar to defend you, but I don't think there is a jury in the world that would convict.

I am absolutely disgusted . . . not only with the psycho who did this but also with the cowards who did nothing (yes, I said NOTHING) to stop him. Saying something doesn't equal doing something.

I'm not a parent, so I can't begin to fathom the love a father/mother has for a child, but I can say that I'd have had to do something--draw, acquire, fire, repeat as necessary--had I seen that going on. Like Brian said, there's no jury in the world that would convict.

I think the point was, who cares about the jury...I would drop a freaking grenade in his pants and crap on the remains....

annnyway....

This man did not deserve such a quick death for his actions:mad::rolleyes::mad: A much slower and painful death would of been nice but the liberals would just of got him off by saying he went temporarilly insane:mad::):) My glock would be ablaze if I saw this happen to any child!!!!!!!!!! People, we need to have more vigalantey justice for cases like this.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect

Please note that I am not excusing the inaction by the witnesses; I'm simply pointing to the accepted explanation for the inaction. All it takes for the bystander effect to be broken is for one person to grow the balls necessary to take action.

I'm glad the SOB is dead, but I'd be more glad if I was reading that he was beaten to death by witnesses brandishing tire irons.

That is completely FUBAR...... what in the world would posess someone to do such a thing?

:mad:WOW!. I am sitting at my desk at work, eating my luch and reading this, and I have had to stop eating because my stomach is in knots. The raw emotion that this story makes me feel is indescribable. I have a two year old little girl, and the thought of someone doing this to her makes tears come to my eyes. I now know, without a doubt, that I do not carry enough rounds on my person. Luckily I care a Glock, and after I have emptied all the .230grain Golden Sabers into a D**K HEAD head like this, it then can be used as a Hammer.:mad::)

A steel framed para 1911 would make a much better hammer! I'd have to do my best to bend the frame and barrel.
