Looking for my first AR15, but....

Are any AR15's worth owning if under the $600 range?

Of course without any accessories, will add those later. Just purchased a Glock 23 and funds are an issue at this point, but Christmas is here!!!!!

Positives and Negatives for purchasing an AR for under $600?

Thanks in advance,

Newman

[sub]I paid $875 (out the door price) for my Windham, and I'm as happy as I can be with it. I don't know how close that is to your $600 mark before taxes and TICS, but it's a hell of a deal. It also included the removeable carry handle with sights, so that wasn't an added expense, Dicks had the Bushmaster Carbon 15 for $699 which included a red-dote scope that I considered. Seemed like a nice rifle, but the jury is still out (with me) about the plastic rifles. [/sub]

[sub]Taxes on $600, is about $59.00, then the TICS feeof $10.00 makes a $600 gun come out to $669.... so maybe it wasn't that close.[/sub]

The best "budget" AR is the S&W M&P Sport. [/quote]

And a few folks have gotten them for $599.

Mine were $619.

Assume OP did not include tax/TICS or shipping/transfer in his $600 criterion.

A Double Star AR from a source such as J.T. Distributing (Kentucky?) is good to go (check the AR15 forum for owner comments). Available both assembled and as kits. I think Bud's also sells them. You give up things like M.P.I. inspected bolts 'n such but they are basic and good to go. As said, check out AR15 Forum for user reviews.

double star has been making rifles and parts for 25 years, longer than alot of the big names, all parts are in house. Great rifles and great 1911 s , also i like the fact the shop is 28 mins from my house doesnt hurt either. buy the double star you wont look back. round count on oldest rifle 2600 to 2700 ,newest rifle 200 , old mil spec 1911 getting close to 1200 , new railed 1911 at 150, all rounds fire in all my guns are reloads and i never had aproblem 110% reliable !!! I would not touch a J&T gun with a 10 foot pole. Doublestar is a great brand but J&T not so much.

But they are the same company! Same address, same phone number in Winchester, KY.

J&T makes the DoubleStar branded components and sells components retail. DoubleStar sells complete rifles and lowers retail.

Whether they are "great" or not, I'll have an opinion soon, as Mike hinted. :)
