I think the Petzl Tikka XP 2 is the best headlamp on the market today. That said, it's 3 AAA, which you don't want.

If I were going to buy a AA headlamp, I'd go with the Petzl Pixa 3 Pro. It's one of the only AA models on the market that doesn't have a require a separate battery pack (which is why most manufacturers went to AAA).

Thanks Mac. That one looks very nice and I like everything about it.....except for it being yellow! Might just have to deal with the color if I can't find anything better.

I prefer to have everything in AA as well. That is because I have a charger for them as well as a solar charger for it as well.

Where did you get your solar charger at? I've been thinking about getting one of those too.

It is a Kodak I bought off of Ebay for like $20. It is a cell phone cahrger but uses rechargeable AA batteries that are removeale.

This is it:

It will charge the batteries from dead in about 8 hours in sunlight. This makes it possible to always have a AA flashlight at night as long as there was light during the day.

Nice, I was looking for just this sort of thing. I want to standardize batteries and I have a Goal Zero charger setup. I can charge 4 batteries at once (AA or AAA) but a lot of headlamps use odd numbers of batteries (like 3x AAA) so something that takes 2 or 4 batteries are about ideal.

That solar charger you linked looks pretty good, as long as it can recharge the batteries in an average day I'm down to try it and use it to supplement the goal zero... too many of the smaller ones seem to require several days worth of sun to charge its batteries fully.

The goal zero chargers are nice. REI occasionally runs some pretty good deals on their stuff.

I used to be an all AA guy, too. But, I had to break with that a couple of years ago when I started running a MIOX purifier thar required CR123s. It was a big enough feature advantage to get me to start working some other stuff in. That switch opened me up to better lights, and there was no going back.

Any solar charger of decent quality ought to be able to recharge AAAs, too. I say that to say, don't count the Tikka XP2 out before you try one. It's noticeably lighter on your head, and seems brighter than the 2xAA models I've used.

I have never heard of the MIOX but now I am lookking pretty hard at it. I can buy rechargeable CR123's and use my solar to charge them.

I am going to 12V LED's if I loose power long term. I will isolate all the 110v off the house grid as well as isolate my house from the public grid. Then I will just plug in my batteries straight into an outlet and flip the breakers to connect certain areas of the house to the batteries. I will have 2-3 LED panels per room that are wired into the light fixtures so I will be able to use light switches like normal. I am just wanting to keep the boogyman away at night. The LED panels I have ran for over a day off a single 9v battery.

Speaking of light check this out.

I'm happy to send you mine and let you check it out. They're pretty sweet. Dirty water + rock salt = your own miniature commercial water treatment plant.

The SteriPens work well, too. I find it hard to trust a simple light, but they work great.
