Saw the thread on the use of humidifiers fo rhealth(?) reasons.

Anyone use a de-humidifier in their garages or gun rooms?

I have a rather cool and humid garage; and thinking of a dehumidifier to counteract some of the effects. I'd like to use the garage for safer storage. For one thing, I have a lot of books that don't hold up well out there. And thinking of insulating a small room in it to place safes and ammo cabinets.

Any comments or ideas?

I have one in our basement. Lots of books, keeps them fresh.

Hooked it to trickle into my house AC condensate pump.

I've been running a Frigidaire brand dehumidifier I got at Sam's for ~2-3 years in a garage that is large enough to hold three cars. The rating of the unit is not large enough for the volume, but it seems to work fine. I set it to 45%. Even in the summer, it doesn't get close to running full time, so I assume it's fighting a winning battle. If I heard it running all the time, I'd add a second unit.

I recommend sitting the unit on something to raise it up then put a hose on it to drain down to a 5 gallon bucket or run a hose to the outside. The built-in bucket will fill up QUICK in the summer. I prefer emptying a 5 gallon bucket since I am able to see how much water it is pulling from the air. If it drains to the outside, I really can't tell how well it's working.
