Thinking about going back to school, Gunsmithing school in Oklahoma.

First off let me say that family has been pushing me to go back to school for a long while now. My brother has been pushing the hardest lately. Him and I have talked at length about what I would be interested in going to school for. I brought up Gunsmithing as a possibility. I half arsed looked into a couple of places, Ashworth and Penn Foster. However, they just didn't seem to be what I'm looking for. About two weeks ago my brother texted me that he found a school http://www.mscok.edu/ out in http://www.mapquest....omingo&state=OK . They have a 2 year program and apparently have a summer program http://www.mscok.edu...mer-Program.pdf .

Everything sounds good, but not very knowledgeable about Oklahoma and especially the area around the school. There is a Walmart close by (13 miles from school) that I could transfer to, fingers crossed and still have a job. I'm also gonna investigate if I take some business related courses if Walmart will chip in with my going back to school. I have normal GI Bill plus the post 9/11 benefits which would help pay for the school and possibly my rent while out there. There are so many problems/issues/headaches this would create. However in the long run would net me a better paying job and with the up tick in the sales of firearms, trained gunsmiths will probably be in slightly higher demand. Former Oklahoma residents familiar with the area and gun laws please reply. Also those who can comment on having done similar course or learning experience, please reply. Also anyone who owns or works for a FFL feel free to chime in also. Edited by ArmyVeteran37214

I've been thinking the same thing. I've been looking into the Colorado school of trade and like the sound of their program, 14 months and apparently some very good training.

The school in one of the Carolina's also seems quite good, haven't gotten around to the Oklahoma school yet.

Since I have some experience in Higher Ed, I'll chime in.

Wal-Mart will pay for classes if you qualify (if it fits in their plan for you) and only through their school. They partner with a for-profit online university. So, you might be able to get the business courses there and take he GS classes elsewhere. With the GI stuff involved, that would be even more convoluted.

Any way you go, make sure the school is Regionally Accredited. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_accreditation so that you won't have to worry about losing credits if you change schools or pick up a few classes that aren't offered at one school with another. If you decide to go onto a Bachelors program, you might not get credit for some of the technical stuff, but should for the business and math courses.

I see students every day that have spent quite a bit of money at otherwise accredited or unaccredited schools who try to "transfer in" to an accredited school only to find that they're starting over.

If you have some more specific questions, message me. I'll be glad to try to help.

I will resist the urge to put in a plug for my Alma Mater (and employer), as we don't offer gunsmithing courses!

Murray State is Regionally accredited. In that part of the country, here's what you're looking for:

I haven't looked at either of those, but for me Colorado is to far away. As for Carolina, IDK depends on cost of living and gun laws. From what I have gathered, Oklahoma is pretty similar to TN's firearms laws with a few extra pro's.
