ar pistol sbr help

ive done some research and think i have everything figured out just want to make sure im right.

i currently have a 9mm ar pistol i want to SBR. i understand i can keep it as a pistol until all the paperwork comes back etc. i have a few questions though.

* on the forum do i have to list caliber as 9mm? effectively making ALWAYS 9mm and not able to switch back to 5.56(i have a mag block not dedicated lower) or can i list it as "multi" like lowers are normally marked.
* since i already have a s/n i do not need one engraved...just use the existing correct?
* at what point do i do the engraving

You must list a caliber. And although you can swap calibers as needed you must always have a 9mm upper to put on it. Or if you list 5.56 as the caliber you must always have a 5.56 to put on it. Anyway you do it you must have a caliber upper to match what is on the form.

You use the existing serial number.

It is better to have the lower engraved [u]BEFORE[/u] the paperwork comes back. If you do it then the firearm is not a NFA item and any FFL can handle it. Once the paperwork comes back the lower [u]IS[/u] an NFA item and the engraving must be done by a dealer that is licensed to handle NFA items.

You can also write a letter asking for a variance. (do it after you get your form 1 back) I have one registered in 556, and the variance letter from ATF states that it can be used for 9mm also.  It took longer to get a variance than what the form 1 took.  Almost 6 weeks back in 2004.

what has to be engraved on the firearm when it is a sbr?  i am doing this with an ak pistol so i am very curious.

The legal name of the entity filing the form 1, and the city/state of same entity.
