I'm seeing these available on the net and I'm wondering if anyone has handled one. Are they worth a darn?

I saw a couple at the show today. Maybe 50% finish left and wood only a mother could love. Other than that, all matching #'s and appeared very servicable. I actually liked the way they looked...battle tested. Edited by Garufa

Only worth it if you have a C&R and want to order one without paying a transfer fee, or you just have to have one that looks like it has been well used. For $25-50 more you can get a real nice one. I picked up a Chineese SKS last year that looked like it had never been fired for $275 and still see them in that price range.

These replies answer my question. My impression is that these are pretty rough and don't really justify what I consider a premium price for a well-used SKS. I do have a C&R, but even then, I know I can get a nice used one for a few bucks more. I've read that some appear to have never been rebuilt, and are in as-issued condition, so who knows what they will look like or what problems they may have. I'll pass. Thanks for the info.

I got one from J&G. Matching #s. great bore. Blue is @60-70% stock is dinged up pretty good.

If you want a nice shooter you can do better with a modern norinco. Id you want an interesting historical piece this is the only game in town.

Folks at gunboards have concluded these were imported from Albania.

Widener's has some that caught my eye

Type 59, Yugo SKS 7.62x39 rifles.

They are 7.62x39 caliber and come with a sling, LEATHER ammo pouch, plastic oil bottle, and string bore cleaner. What you see in the picture is what you get. They do not have a muzzle break or a grenade sight, but they are in excellent condition.

They are pricey at $375.

What do you think?

I thought they were over priced at $69 a pop, but that's just my opinion, don't even get me started on what I think of Mosins...

Anyway the best imported surplus rifles are IMHO straight pull Schmidt-Rubin's & Lee-Enfields, unfortunately they aren't as common as they used to be, but if you look around you can still find them at decent prices, definately would rather have either of those two if they were found in that same price range as those Yugos.
