I made myself look like and A$$

As I was loadinganother mag at Range USA tonight for my P-89, I noticed one of my 9mm rounds felt weird. I stopped loading the mag, and compared the round to the other 9mm, and both casing said 9mm.This particular round felt lighter and smaller in diameter. I thought "hold -up now"....and these were the rounds the range sells (starts with a K)...so I thought this is weird. So I decided not to shoot it, and ask questions on my way out.

As we were leaving I walked up to two of the employees there and said "Will one of you guys answer a question for me?", and one of them said sure I will try. I said "Am I crazy, or is there a difference between these two bullets?"....and I set two bullets down. He picked them up and said "Yep there is a difference", and I said "So I aint crazy", and his reply is "No, you are crazy. You see this is a 9mm round and this is a .40 round."

My dunba$$ picked up one of my buddies .40 rounds instead of the other 9mm. I felt about two inches tall. I said "I am sorry, I picked up the wrong bullet to show you", and then I handed over the real 9mm.

After I got the stupid part over, he compared the two bullets from the same box that I had presented him, and his conclusion was that one had a heavier grain bullet than the other, and it was seated farther down into the casing. I was shocked that this would happen in the same box of bullets, and he said that particular company ( the one that starts with the K) was a reloading company and they buy whatever bullet is the cheapest.

Even though I made an A$$ out of myself at first, my buddy did commend me on being sharp enough to feel a difference in the bullets as I was loading them. But I am sure I will be the butt of a few jokes around there for a while.

ahhhh thats nothing to feel stupid about, thats an honest mistake...

Better to feel sorry than feel pain from a mistake. Just relax and good job on picking up on the difference in feel on the cartridges.

It happens to everyone. I'm especially careful when shooting .380 and 9mm side by side. I have gotten them mixed up a time or two.

If I felt it was necessary to speak to a manager, I would have.

I am a kid myself (25 years old), so when I say "kid", I am speaking of my peers.

I am glad to see that Range USA is hiring Vets, but that has nothing to do with gun safety. It doesn't matter if it was a five star general who had attempted to correct me, it still would have been wrong, because both firearms were pointed down range.

I just feel he was trying to do the best he could, and saw me holding two firearms, and decided to remind me of the rules. He wasn't rude about it. It just was unnecessary.

Sure, but you also have to think they never know how experienced you are when you are there - they have tons of people coming through those doors every day, and all it takes is one person to cause a disaster. I imagine any time they see a situtaion like that, even from long-time member, they're going to be a little more attentive.

And I, for one, appreciate it. I'd rather they be overly-attentive than negligent...

Situtation like what. A customer pointing firearms down range?

I appreciate their attention towards the rules, but as I stated before I was following the rules. Unless there is one about holding two firearms at the same time, with the slides locked backed, pointed down range, being a NO-NO.

That is funny about the ammo, I wouldnt sweat it too much, it was probably forgotten after you left, I am sure it happens a lot....

As far as the Range Cowboy, although you may have not been doing anything dangerous, he was probably just reminding you...I wouldnt sweat it.

As Crimson said, they probably deal with a lot of stuff with new shooters. They treat all the same, as with any range.

anyway, glad you got your ammo deal worked out, sounds like that guy was good...

maybe he thought you were gonna go all "Die hard" and be a double fisted shooter??? LMAO...

Like I said, I wouldnt let it get to you, he was probably just making the rounds and wanted to remind ya....

Ok I wil remove the part of my original post that stated, how I was using proper Gun Range Safety and was stopped to be reminded to use proper Gun Range Safety.

Sorry I was in the wrong.

nothing needs to change...its all good!

MM, don't get bent - the point is even though you were following range rules, they were being safe. Better safe than sorry, no? They have no idea if you have a friggen clue, and I'd prefer a tap and reminder rather than the hands-off approach I've seen elsewhere.

IOW, no one is saying you are wrong in any way, I'm just saying them being a little more safe-oriented than not is a good thing...

yeah, probably so. It would not be good to start double blasting. Maybe that is what he thought I was fixing to do. Is there a rule against that though? I wouldn't want to waste ammo like that, just wondering.

thanks, but I am not bent. Straight as can be. I just don't want to cause any problems.

Safety is first. Feelings much later.

Excellent. I have no doubt you were being COMPLETELY safe, just saying I appreciate and understand their eagerness for safety.

Cheers,

Now back to the original topic.

Has anyone else ever found "different" rounds in the same box.

I think the fellow behind the counter was dead on with the bullet weight being different and the bullet being seated farther into the casing. I guess I just firgured that there would be consistency within a single box.

Nope, not that I recall. I buy all my target stuff at RangeUSA - I use the factory reloads they sell. Always been really good, though I have had maybe four failure to fire's from that stuff (out of, err, probably 3k rounds purchased.

I am not sure if there is a "rule" for that, but I certainly wouldnt want to be shooting next to that....doesnt seem like the safest choice...good question though, I will ask next time I am there...

I think this all depends on the reloading company. They work in a factory type setting, certainly we will find one or two that snuck past the quality assurance....I guess that is the difference between shooting reloads compared to non-reloads?

I was always under the impression that reloads arent perfect...

dunno...but it sounds like the dude behind the counter knew what he was talking about, and helped confirm your suspicion, nice job to both of you!!

When I shoot the K's and the T's in the orange box(mostly these), I always check for bad rounds, hell anything I have ever shot I give a quick visual. As far a different round in the box, I haven't had one, I have had a one or two that the round was pushed a little to far into the case and one that would not fire (tried 3 times) and I have shot a several thousand rounds of that stuff.

It wasnt a "different round" per say, it was still 9mm... he said it seemed to have a heavier bullet, and it was pushed further into the casing
