Gun Shows; What to look out for, and what to expect

Hello everyone,
There is a gun show here in Memphis on the 22nd, I plan on going and I'd like to get some info on "what to look out for, and what to expect".
If you missed my introduction, I'm a 30 year old Memphian who is interested in purchasing my first pistol, and maybe a rifle/shotgun if I can squeeze the two into my budget. I've been reading around for the last month or so, trying to get a idea of what I want, but I'm still not very knowledgeable when it comes to firearms.

I have afew simple questions about the workings of a gun show and how the process works.

Does the standard waiting period apply to a gun sale at a gun show? If so how do I retreive my gun from what I assume is a traveling group?
When buying from a gun show, the guns are used, right? How does a gun being used effect its price?
Is a gun show a safe place to purchase a firearm, or would it be a better idea to use one of the local shops?
When buying a used gun, what kind of things can I look for to make sure I am buying a quality peice?
What do I need to take with me? Is TN id enough?

I have a friend who knows alittle about guns, but he probably won't be able to come with me to the show.

Grendel. I am here in Memphis and would be happy to help you out. I'll send you a PM with my contact info and I can introduce you to some folks at my favorite shop, admittedly I am biased as they let me work there sometimes, and answer any questions you have and find the answers to the ones I don't know.

I will say this, there aren't many deals to be had at the gun shows in Memphis anymore, but they are fun to go to when you are new to firearms. Edited December 7, 2012 by Chucktshoes

Buying at a gun show is no different than buying at a local gun shop.All laws and rules are the same and apply.If you pass the background check you can buy and leave w a gun. At a gun show the variety is larger with more buying choices.Finding someone experienced that you trust is an excellent way to go as cardcutter advised. I wouldn't recommend a gun show as a good place for your first purchase.Like anywhere else the gunshows are there to sell.sellers come and go,you get good and bad sellers everywhere.Look around at the show,get a feel for what you might like,it would be a good experience.Probably a good idea to buy your first locally so you can get help when you need it as a valued previous customer. You may pay a little more but if its a good shop,the value added service is worth more than what you'd save at a gun show.Especially if the guys at the shop are cool and dont try to fleece you.
Gun shows are good if you know what youre looking for and are on top of your pricing.You have to be careful as some of the gun show guys will change parts from kits to sell separately for more money, so know what you want,know what you should get,and if youre not sure ask someone you trust if not sure.The shows can be fun and addictive and educational, to a point.The last thing you want is to get a deal on something thats got problems that can cause damage in the long run.....The best buy is an educated buy,Hope this helps,enjoy!

There is no waiting period in Tennessee. Pass the background check, pay the man, and take your gun home.

There is no waiting period in Tennessee except for the few minutes it takes for your background check to come back. Pick the gun you want, fill out the form and if your background check comes back clean take it home. If it is a private seller you won't have to fill anything out. Hand them money, they hand you gun. What was said above my post is a very smart idea. Bring a knowledgeable person with you if you can. Gun shows are notorious for price gouging. Having a knowledgeable person with you will keep you from potentially over paying or buying a gun not up to par.
